Boston Red Sox prospect Blaze Jordan takes 97mph fastball to the FACE in horrifying scene at minor league game

Boston Red Sox prospect Blaze Jordan is recovering from a 97-mph fastball that hit him in the face during a minor league game in Maine on Friday night.

Playing third base for the Portland Sea Dogs, Boston’s Double-A affiliate, Jordan came to bat against Altoona Curve reliever Eddy Yean, who trailed 12-8 in the ninth inning.

Unfortunately, Yean threw a fastball at Jordan, which hit him right in the face.

The 21-year-old went down in obvious pain before Portland trainers could rush the field to inspect his injuries. Portland would eventually lose 12-9 to Altoona.

Jordan showed off the damage on social media afterward, sharing a photo of his bloody, swollen eye.

“Baseball is tough sometimes,” he wrote. “97 in the face didn’t feel so great but it’s all part of Gods (sic) plan! I’ll be back soon!”

Jordan has been placed on the injured list for seven days while he recovers.

Red Sox fans naturally thought of the late Tony Conigliaro, a Massachusetts player whose career ended abruptly in 1967 after he was hit hard by a ball from Jack Hamilton of the Los Angeles Angels.

The Red Sox lost the World Series to the St. Louis Cardinals that season, while Conigliaro struggled with eye problems for the rest of his career.

Jordan, originally from Mississippi, has struggled with injuries this season after breaking his finger in May.

The former third-round pick has been up and down the prospect rankings during his short professional career. He impressed at High-A Salem in 2023 by hitting .324 with a robust .533 slugging percentage, but has struggled since being brought to Portland late last season.

In April, he won the Eastern League Player of the Week award for his .444 batting average between April 22 and 28.
