Borussia Dortmund star breaks English Champions League record after scoring against Real Madrid

Borussia Dortmund may have surrendered a 2-0 lead against Real Madrid on Tuesday evening, but one of their players left the Bernabeu with a rather special new record.

The German side scored twice in the space of four minutes in the first half of the Champions League match, despite the silence of the home fans.

For the second of those goals, 20-year-old Englishman Jamie Gittens tucked the ball at the back post after meeting Donyell Malen’s inviting low cross.

Scoring at the Bernabeu is a moment no player will ever forget and Gittens’ goal has special meaning.

At the age of 20 years and 75 days, he became the youngest English player to score against Madrid in the Champions League, beating the record previously held by Alan Smith.

Smith was 54 days older when he scored for Leeds against the Spanish giants in 2001.

History-maker Gittens started his career at Reading before joining Manchester City at the age of 14.

The winger spent two years in Manchester before making the move to Germany, where he has since scored six goals in 51 appearances for Dortmund since making his first-team debut in 2022.

Unfortunately for Gittens, his team was unable to maintain the lead they had built up that evening.

Antonio Rudiger pulled one back when he met Kylian Mbappé’s cross with a bullet header, before Vinicius Jr. made the score 2-2 with a tap-in.

Lucas Vazquez put the hosts ahead with a powerful finish before Vinicius put the game to bed with two stunning solo strikes.

The 5-2 defeat leaves Dortmund in fifth place in the Champions League table with six points from three games, while Madrid are in ninth place with the same result but a lower goal difference.
