Borussia Dortmund and Jude Bellingham criticised by Bild after Chelsea Champions League loss

Jude Bellingham ‘didn’t show enough’ for a player valued at £100m, while Sebastien Haller and Salih Ozcan get the second lowest possible scores in Bild’s withering assessment of Borussia Dortmund’s loss to Chelsea.

Borussia Dortmund players were savagely attacked by the German newspaper Bild after they were knocked out of the Champions League by Chelsea.

A Raheem Sterling goal and a Kai Havertz penalty either side of halftime overturned a 1–0 deficit in the first leg and sent Graham Potter’s side to the quarter-finals.

Two Dortmund players, Sebastien Haller and Salih Ozcan, received the second lowest player rating of 5, while England midfielder Jude Bellingham was rated a sub-par 4.

It was a result that ended Dortmund’s excellent 10-match winning streak since German football returned after the World Cup and winter break.

Although they led before the game courtesy of Karim Adeyemi’s goal at Westfalenstadion, they were second best to a Chelsea side that has struggled for form under Potter.

Sterling made the breakthrough on 43 minutes, after Chelsea had seen several good chances come and go, before the round of 16 tie was settled contentiously.

Marius Wolf was penalized for a handball from a Ben Chilwell cross following a VAR review, before Havertz was given a second chance to take his penalty after initially hitting the post.

Replays showed that four Dortmund players had invaded the area when Havertz approached and the German made no mistake on the second question.

Bild said there was “not enough” of Bellingham, the Bundesliga’s most valuable player with a market value of £100m. They added that he “always had a good approach game, but no final product.”

The England international saw an agonizing effort roll off the post and forced a fine save from Kepa Arrizabalaga late on.

1 = excellent; 6 = horrible

Mayer 3; Wolf 4, Schlotterbeck 3, Sule 4, Guerreiro 4, Can 3, Bellingham 4, Ozcan 5 (Bynoe-Gittens 64 min, 3), Brandt N/A (Reyna 5 min, 4), Reus 4, Haller 5

On striker Haller, Bild said that his “lack of fitness” became more and more apparent as the game progressed, with his “performance getting lower and lower”.

Ozcan was initially described as the ‘destroyer’ of Chelsea’s construction game, ‘but he went under in the second half’ and had to be substituted on 64 minutes.

Captain Marco Reus also received a rating of 4, with the review commenting on how frustrated he was with Chelsea’s opening goal after losing one-on-one with Sterling.

Emre Can was one of the best players, described as a ‘builder and fighter’ who ‘had the midfield under control’.

There was sympathy for Wolf and his ‘disputed’ penalty just after half time, but the right-back was unable to contribute anything going forward.
