Boris Johnson says ‘with guts and determination’ Britain can stop the boats ‘just like Australia’ in his latest Ny Breaking column

Boris Johnson is urging Britain to emulate Australia's success in 'Stopping the Boats' in his latest spicy column.

The former prime minister is drawing up a plan to tackle the issue after visiting the Commonwealth country this week.

He points out that Australia is also an island nation and has faced similar problems with people arriving illegally by sea, but has managed to overcome them.

Rishi Sunak has gambled away his premiership by stopping the flow of boats crossing the Channel. Much of Europe is struggling to contain the mass movements of people displaced by conflict and economic hardship.

The government has increased funding to France to prevent boats from leaving, and is trying to speed up the asylum process and pursue return deals.

The laws have been tightened in an effort to limit appeals.

The deal to immediately deport arrivals to Rwanda – intended as a deterrent to those seeking to settle in Britain – has been blocked by the High Court.

But Mr Sunak hopes to revive the policy with a new treaty and emergency legislation that would label Rwanda safe and relax human rights rules.

In a video teasing his column – which will appear in the Ny Breaking tomorrow and on MailOnline tonight – Mr Johnson says of Australia: 'For years they had huge numbers of people coming illegally by sea to try to immigrate.

'And if you want to know how Australia stopped the boats, read about it in the Ny Breaking.

'And also read how we in Britain, if we have enough courage and determination, can do exactly the same.'
