‘Boomer’ Kamala Harris turns 60
Kamala Harris turns 60 today during the campaign.
The vice president has made age an issue in the election, declaring himself a “new generation” ready to take over from 81-year-old Joe Biden, and criticizing 78-year-old Donald Trump as too old for the White House.
From the start of her campaign, Harris has promoted herself to younger voters with an appeal to millennials and Gen Z.
Harris and her team scored points with that audience after taking the Democratic mantle from Biden earlier this summer, immediately leaning into Charlie XCX’s new album “Brat” and the viral Gen Z attention it received.
Her campaign has also seen Harris make time for influencers and TikTokers, especially at the Democratic National Convention, where some social media stars became pseudo-reporters.
But whether Harris’s doubling of younger voters helps Trump, 60, remains to be seen.

Harris’ age only just makes her a ‘baby boomer’: the generation born between 1946 and 1964.
The vice president, who is about 18 years younger than her rival, has increasingly pointed to age as a factor in the 2024 election.
A recent report suggests that the ex-president is “exhausted” as a result of his constant campaigning. It was cited as a reason why he recently canceled several interviews. Trump’s campaign strongly denied the report.
But Harris used those reports as a cudgel against Trump on Friday, suggesting he is too tired for the rigors of his job.
“I’ve heard reports that — at least his team says so — that he’s suffering from exhaustion,” she told reporters after a campaign event in Michigan.
‘And apparently that’s the excuse why he doesn’t do interviews. And of course he doesn’t do the CNN town hall. He refuses to have another debate. And you know, being president of the United States is probably one of the hardest jobs in the world.”

“And so we really have to ask ourselves if he’s exhausted on the campaign trail, is he qualified to do the job?” Harris wondered.
Trump hit back, saying: She’s a loser. She doesn’t go to events.
‘I have now been without rest for 48 days. And I have that loser who doesn’t have the energy of a rabbit.
“Tell me when you’ve seen me get even a little bit of rest. Not only am I not, I’m not even tired. I’m really excited.’
A year ago, Harris sang a very different tune about presidential candidates and their ages.
When Biden was still expected to be the Democratic presidential nominee, Harris said age is more than just a number.
“I would say age is more than a chronological fact,” Harris said at the time.
“I spend a lot of time with our president, whether it’s in the Oval Office, the Situation Room and other places.”
Harris rarely spoke negatively about his age when it came to the 81-year-old Biden while he was running
“Not only is he absolutely authoritative in rooms around the world, but in the Oval Office, meeting with members of Congress, meeting with industry leaders, meeting with community leaders, I will tell you that he often speaks to everyone in the world is present. space to think about how we can solve problems.’
Biden, the oldest president in American history, dropped out of the presidential election eight months later.
Presidential elections are a major test of endurance for any candidate, but the 2024 race was unusually age-focused.

Harris is unlikely to take time off from the campaign trail for her birthday.
Earlier this week, she stepped up her attacks on Trump’s age.
She said: ‘Donald Trump is becoming increasingly unstable.’
Trump recently said, “She’s younger. I mean, she’s 60 years old… I didn’t know she was 60. I thought she was a little younger. But she’s sixty.’
Harris recently released a medical report describing her as “excellently healthy and fit for the presidency, with her only minor health problem being seasonal allergies and hives.”
Polls show age is a major problem for Harris.
Polls from the Pew Research Center showed that the percentage of people calling Trump “mentally sharp” fell from 58 percent in July to 52 percent in September.

And while 49 percent of voters said Trump’s age would hurt his candidacy, 46 percent of voters said Harris’ age would help hers.
Harris has strong support among younger voters.
But older voters are leaning toward Trump.
In a recent CBS poll, voters aged 45 to 64 choose Trump over Harris 53 percent to 46 percent, while among voters 65 and older this grows to 57 percent to 42 percent.
