The Total Eclipse Of The Heart singer, 73, told the Mirror that when she became pregnant with her partner Robert in 1976 at the age of 39, she felt it was the right time to have a child.

‘Robert and I were so sad when it happened, but I’m not the type to dwell on things. The next weekend I was in Paris for a TV program, then I just moved on.’

Born Gaynor Sullivan in Neath, South Wales, in 1951, Bonnie released Total Eclipse Of The Heart on her fifth studio album, Faster Than The Speed Of The Night, in 1983.

After being discovered at the age of 17 singing in a club in Swansea, Bonnie signed to the same record label as Elvis Presley.

The Welsh singer, known for her distinctive husky voice, also achieved great success with Footloose hit Holding Out For A Hero and It’s A Heartache.

She also represented Great Britain in the Eurovision Song Contest 2013, finishing in 19th place overall, after performing the song Believe In Me.

Despite turning 72 this past June, Bonnie is still active and touring with her European tour – which kicks off in Finland on Tuesday, April 9 – in support of her third live album In Berlin, due April 19.

Speaking in 2022, she revealed that she never gets tired of listening to the sound of her biggest hit, noting: ‘People often ask if I’m tired of singing Total Eclipse, but of course I’m not. I love it’.

After its release in 1983, it topped the US charts for four weeks and number one in the UK for two weeks, also reaching number one in several countries.

The music video also recently surpassed one billion hits on YouTube.

While it may sound like other power ballads typical of the 1980s, the story behind the song is darker than you might think.

The song was written and produced by Jim Steinman, who revealed to Playbill in a 2002 interview that he wrote Total Eclipse of the Heart as a vampire love story.

He said: ‘If anyone listens to the lyrics, they really seem like vampire lines. It’s all about the darkness, the power of darkness and love’s place in the dark.’
