A police investigation has confirmed the origins of a mysterious bone that washed up on a Western Australian beach.
The 40cm bone was spotted sticking out of the sand at Cottesloe Beach, 14km from Perth, around 9am on Saturday.
WA Police secured the bone with the help of Surf Live Saving staff.
“A forensics officer attended Cottesloe Beach and collected the bone,” a WA Police spokesperson said.

The bone appears to be a femur.
A police spokesman said the bone has since been further examined by a pathologist who determined it to be human.
“Further forensic investigation will now take place to match the bone with any missing persons,” the spokesperson said.
