Celebrity Makeup Artist Tomy Rivero Reveals Tips for Creating Bold Looks
FIERCE BOLD WING
Penelope Cruz attended the ‘L’Immensita’ photo call last month looking festive and fabulous in a black Chanel jacket and sparkling chandelier earrings.
The ‘Official Competition’ star wore her long brown locks in a half up half down hairstyle with her wispy bangs parted down the middle.
Her soft, minimalist makeup look was completed with a strong winged eye that’s perfect for almost any occasion.
To create a clean line like Penelope’s, Tomy’s secret weapon is a tapered angle brush.
‘Using a tapered angle brush and black eyeshadow, trace the location of your wing. After tracing your eyeshadow map, blend in the sharpness with a liquid liner pencil for precision.
To clean up the edges, the expert recommends using a concealer brush and a bit of foundation.
“I like to use a concealer and concealer brush as an eraser afterwards to sharpen the edge.”
To create a clean line like Penelope’s, celebrity makeup artist Tomy Rivero recommends outlining the location of her wing with black eyeshadow, then covering it with a liquid liner for precision.
“Some people find that using a hand mirror and pointing it up and over the forehead helps them see the eyelid better,” Tomy said.
But the New York-based artist and owner of a salon of the same name in Washington Heights cautions that this method doesn’t work for everyone.
Some beauty junkies rely on eyeliner tape to achieve a straight line, but Tomy says ‘I don’t like to wear anything that pulls on my skin around the eye area. I also feel that the tape can create a very unnatural shape to the eyes.’
To prevent it from bleeding under the eye, the beauty expert recommends passing a shadow under the lash line in the same color as your pencil.

OMBRE EYES
Supermodels are no stranger to experimental beauty and at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards, all eyes were on Heidi Klum.
The ‘America’s Got Talent’ judge looked like she had just walked off a couture runway in mesmerizing ombre eye makeup.
“Green is a fabulous color this time of year for your makeup wardrobe because it dresses up the eyes,” Tomy said.
She adds, “Jewel-toned green eyeshadow looks good on everyone and can be used as an eye shadow or simply as an eyeliner for highlighting without the commitment of an all-green eye look.”

For a dramatic look, Tomy recommends applying a light concealer all over the lid as a base and setting with loose powder.
Then add your highlight color at the corners of the eyes and just below the brow bone.
“Follow that with a cream satin-finish shadow (I love EpicLight Whispering Peach) to create the mess you want, and as an eyeshadow base – this intensifies the pigments and locks them in for long wear.”
While Tomy isn’t a fan of eyeliner tape, he recommends medical tape for its gentle adherence.
‘Use a small piece of medical paper tape to create a sharp angle right at the lash line towards the end of the brow.
‘Then blend your eyeshadow in a filling motion over the cream shadow. Blend the edges with a small tapered smudge brush (don’t blend too much) and fill in the upper waterline with a black kohl eye pencil. Fill in any gaps between the lashes with the pencil keeping it tight to the lash line.
‘Use a liner brush and blend with the pencil; you want a creamy texture to brush it on to create the illusion of a fuller lash line’.
tomy favors individual lashes to create a fluffy Heidi look, and a double coat of mascara on top and bottom lashes.
While Tomy isn’t a fan of eyeliner tape, he recommends medical tape for its gentle adherence. He suggests using it to create a sharp angle from lash line to brow before shading.
To recreate the James Charles look, Tomy recommends drawing two lines with light pencil shadows, then covering them with a brighter liquid liner, using a concealer in the exact shade of your skin tone to correct any mistakes.
SEEING DOUBLE
More is more for beauty YouTuber James Charles, so it came as no surprise that the 23-year-old turned up at the 2022 People’s Choice Awards wearing an inspiring makeup look we couldn’t wait to copy: double wings.
According to Tomy, the trick to achieving such flawless lines starts with finding a cream concealer that matches your skin tone perfectly.
‘Using a pencil that’s a couple of shades lighter than the final liner you’ll use, draw two lines across your eyelid.
‘Once you have your outline, paint over them with liquid liner.’
For a flawless finish, Tomy recommends using a brush and concealer to correct any mistakes and reinforce the shape of the lines, then apply a colorless translucent powder to prevent the lines from blending.
The artist suggests using a pencil a couple of shades lighter than the final liner, drawing two lines where you want them, then painting them in with liquid liner.
