A new first-person video game is sparking controversy for its hyper-realistic graphics.
Footage from the game – dubbed Unrecord – was shared on Twitter this week tells the story of a tactical officer who chases and kills criminals.
Players are thrust into the action through a bodycam camera angle that bears uncanny resemblances to police footage footage that has emerged in recent years.
One Twitter user said the tactical shooter “gives real credence to the nonsense politicians have been spouting for years about video games conditioning young people.”

The game’s violent nature doesn’t deter others who are eager for Unrecord’s release and hit back at critics.

The problem stems from the current number of mass shootings that have plagued the US in 2023 – the number is over 160.
The trailer shows the body camera’s first-person view strapped to a man as he enters an abandoned warehouse, where he then engages other humans for a shootout.
It ends with him entering a room on the second floor and asking someone in a locked room where Oscar is, only to be hit by an explosion.
Steam – the online PC gaming platform – has shared the update, along with Unrecord’s co-creator Alexandre Spindler. Wednesday.
Unrecord is a tactical shooter where players can expect an immersive and narrative experience.
Unrecord offers complex dialogues, innovative gameplay mechanics, tricky moral dilemmas and a unique shooting system.
‘The storyline in Unrecord can be compared to a detective novel or a thriller.

‘I’m going to get a lot of hate for this – but this level of realism in video games should be heavily moderated in *shooters* for anyone *under a certain age*, I hope parents do their job.
“This level of shooting and killing realism makes *me* feel uneasy as if I was watching a real leak from a military or police operation,” shared Twitter user Trainwreck.
And others suggested that the game glorifies police brutality. But not everyone agrees with this assumption.
“I see that a lot of people have a problem with the game Unrecord that glorifies police brutality because you play as a cop. Ugh yeah, all those dutiful and war games glorifying the military killing Arabs and Russians and everything in between isn’t a problem, is it,” shared Twitter user Jar.
Steam addressed the idea of Unrecord being pro-police in a recent post.
“As a French studio that appeals to a global audience, the game does not engage in any foreign policy issues and is not inspired by real life events,” the blog post reads.
‘The game naturally avoids undesirable subjects such as discrimination, racism and violence against women and minorities.

However, there is still the issue of the realistic gun violence plaguing the US, which has seen 163 mass shootings so far this year.
Then there is also a division over whether violent video games cause children to become more aggressive.
Real-life manifestations of violence, such as mass shootings in the US, are attributed by some politicians to video games rather than lax gun regulation and easy access to firearms.
Numerous studies are published annually on this subject, but with conflicting findings.
Researchers at Iowa State University conducted a 2014 study that found that children who repeatedly play brutal video games learn thought patterns that stay with them and influence their behavior as they grow older
Scientists found that the effect is the same regardless of age, gender or culture.
In 2020, however, the opposite was observed.
Researchers from Massey University, the University of Tasmania and Stetson University reviewed multiple long-term studies of video games and aggression.
The team found no evidence of a substantial link between “aggressive game content” and signs of anger or rage later in childhood.
“Poor quality studies” have likely exaggerated the impact of games on aggression in the past, while better quality studies show that the effects of gaming are “negligible,” said the researchers involved.
