Officials on the holiday island of Fuerteventura say they have found the body of a British tourist who went missing on Wednesday.

She is said to have stayed with her family in the hotel on the island, the second largest of the Canary Islands.

Alex from Liverpool wrote alongside a photo of his 73-year-old mother: ‘This is my mother Anne Baillie.

“She has been reported missing since Wednesday, June 7 around 9:30 am.

Local reports around the time she disappeared said she had gone out for her usual morning walk.

Yesterday, an emergency service organization led by the municipality confirmed that her body had been found.

The discovery was made late Saturday.

Fuerteventura Emergencias said in a statement: ‘The lifeless body of the English tourist last seen on June 7 has been found in the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park in the municipality of La Oliva.

‘Various aid and security organizations were involved in the search.’

Anne’s relatives reportedly raised the alarm after she failed to return to her hotel.

Volunteers from hotel employees are said to have been among those who took part in the search.

An autopsy will take place and the results will be sent to a local examining magistrate instead of being made public immediately, as is normal in Spain.

There are no reports that authorities consider her death suspicious at this stage.

A British expat from Fuerteventura, who informed locals of the news that Anne had been found dead, wrote on Facebook yesterday: ‘Unfortunately, Anne’s body was discovered last night in the dunes.

Thank you to everyone who helped with the search and shared her son’s post.

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to her family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

“I know her son thought there was an incredible community on the island and that means so much to him.”

The area where Anne’s body was discovered is located in the northeast of Fuerteventura in a desert landscape full of contrasts bordering the blue ocean.

The sand dunes offer spectacular views of the island of Lobos and Lanzarote.
