The body of a child was found buried in the backyard of a house after a week-long police search.

West Midlands Police officers were searching a property on Clarence Road in Handsworth when the remains were discovered.

The force confirmed in a statement Sunday that the body was that of a child.

An autopsy will be performed to establish the cause of death. No further details about the child’s age or gender have been released.

The force said a man and a woman were arrested on December 9 on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child and a separate case of willful neglect.

A spokesman for the force said: “Officers searching the garden of a property in Handsworth have discovered what are believed to be human remains.” The body is believed to be that of a child; an autopsy will be performed in due course to establish the cause of death.

‘A 40-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman were arrested on December 9 on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child and a separate case of willful neglect. Both have been charged with negligence and are in pretrial detention.

Tai-zamarai Yasharahyalah, 40, appeared before Birmingham Magistrates Court on 9 December.

He was referred for the next pre-trial hearing at Birmingham Crown Court on 9 January 2023.

Naiyahmi Yasharahyalah, 41, appeared before magistrates on December 13.

The police began the search on December 13 after receiving information about the death of a child in 2020.

Detective Inspector Joe Davenport, of the Public Protection Unit, said that when the search began, the force had moved quickly to set up an investigation.

“We have acted quickly on the information and our investigations are ongoing to establish exactly what happened.

“I understand that this will come as a shock to the local community, but please do not speculate on the circumstances.

“We encourage anyone with any information to get in touch.”
