A woman has been arrested in South Korea over the deaths of two children discovered in suitcases in southern Auckland.
South Korean authorities arrested the 42-year-old woman on Thursday on the basis of an arrest warrant following a request from New Zealand police.
The arrest comes a month after the children’s remains were discovered in suitcases in a storage unit at Manurewa on 11 August by an Auckland family.
“New Zealand Police have filed an application to extradite her to New Zealand to face the charges and have requested that she remain in custody pending completion of the extradition process,” Detective Inspector Tofilau said. Faamanuia Vaaelua.
“In the meantime, a number of investigations need to be completed both in New Zealand and abroad.”
Investigators also acknowledged the continued assistance of South Korean authorities.
“Police also want to acknowledge the overwhelming support of the public since the beginning of a very challenging investigation,” the statement said.
“As the case is now in court, the police are unable to comment further.”
