A woman found dead with her partner in a luxury Queensland unit after suspected suicide was battling a serious illness.

'Reclusive' retired couple Bryan Monk, 70, and Janice Walker, 68, were found in their unit in Urangan, near Hervey Bay, during a welfare check on Tuesday.

Mrs. Walker battled a serious illness in the months before their deaths and was approaching end-of-life care Courier mail reported.

Initial investigations indicate the grim case was a murder-suicide, but police have not yet determined whether the couple agreed to end their lives together.

Queensland Police were called to their home at Poinciana Penthouse Villas, located two blocks from the beach and Hervey Bay's famous Urangan Pier, at around 12pm.

Police have not said whether the couple was injured or whether a weapon was found at the scene.

However, they have ruled out the use of euthanasia drugs. It is not known whether Mrs Walker's illness would have qualified her for voluntary assisted dying.

Detective Sergeant Mick Polit said that 'a number of items had been collected for DNA testing, along with several documents of interest'.

He did not want to provide more details about how the couple died.

It is understood Mr Monk and Ms Walker moved to the area from the interstate about eight years ago and had no family in the area.

Neighbors alerted police after the couple had not been seen outside their home for several days.

A neighbor described the couple as quiet, mostly by themselves and often together on their balcony.

Queensland Police said detectives from the Maryborough Criminal Investigation Branch and forensic police remained at the scene on Wednesday and a 'post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death'

Police are appealing for anyone who may have seen anything or has relevant information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Their deaths come less than a year after another Hervey Bay couple, Beverley and Geoffrey Cornwell, took their own lives.

Mrs Cornwell, 77, and her husband, 80, were found holding hands in bed on March 6, 2023.

Their decision came a decade after Mr Cornwell was named MS Carer of the Year in 2013 for caring for his wife when multiple sclerosis took her mobility in 2007.

Despite battling the painful illness for more than a decade, Mrs Cornwell did not qualify for Voluntary Assisted Dying.
