Outraged locals detain an allegedly drunk Australian tourist accused of going naked in a religious part of Indonesia
An outraged crowd was caught on camera as they made a civilian arrest of Bodhi Mani Risby-Jones, 23, from Queensland, who is now being flogged and faces up to five years in prison.
He is accused of causing chaos on Simeulue Island, in the conservative Aceh area, after allegedly drinking vodka in his room at Moon Beach Resort on Thursday.
Risby-Jones allegedly walked out naked and allegedly assaulted a security guard before assaulting a motorcyclist, leaving him 50 stitches in a gaping leg wound.
He then allegedly attacked other bystanders before fleeing to the beach, where enraged locals caught up with him and tied him with rope.

The angry mob then threatened to set fire to the resort where he was staying.
Simeulue, off the coast of Sumatra, is the only Indonesian province where Sharia law is enforced, and he could be flogged for public intoxication – though police say they are currently only investigating his alleged violent attacks.
Simeulue Police Chief Senior Commissioner Jatmiko claimed that Risby-Jones attacked everyone in sight before the mob gathered and chased after him.
He came out of his room naked. The security guard tried to stop him but was hit in the neck and fell down,” Jatmiko told the The Sydney Morning Herald.
He then went out into the street and disturbed passersby. He beat almost everyone who was on the street.
“People got angry and almost set the resort on fire. Fortunately, the local police and the village chief managed to calm the crowd down.’
The police chief claimed the 23-year-old man knocked a man off his motorcycle and then threw the bike on top of him after it ended up in the gutter.
The lower part of the rider’s leg was ripped open and 50 stitches had to be put in, prompting his wife to report the incident to the police.
Risby-Jones now faces charges under Section 351 of Indonesia’s Penal Code.
The charge of assault resulting in grievous bodily harm carries a maximum sentence of five years behind bars.
Although the police chief said Risby-Jones was intoxicated at the time of his arrest, there has been no record of him being charged for it.
Sharia law means that people who visit and live in the province can be flogged for drinking alcohol, homosexuality, court-martial sex and adultery.
Since the report the motorcyclist’s wife filed with police was about violence and not alcohol, Risby-Jones will not be investigated under Islamic law.

Exceptions to the alcohol ban in Aceh can be made for tourists who choose to drink in private, the police chief explained.
However, police have warned that they can still investigate the alcohol claims, and if they do, Sharia law may be applied.
Originally from Noosa, Risby-Jones told police he came to Simeulue Island with a partner as part of a three-week surfing holiday in Indonesia.
Three Indonesian men each received 40 lashes after being accused of drinking in the ultra-conservative province in 2021.
