Bob Marley: One Love trailer starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as reggae legend debuts at CinemaCon 2023

Paramount offered one first look at the upcoming biopic drama Bob Marley: A love to select fans at CinemaCon 2023 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

While few details have been released about the film, it reportedly chronicles his journey from his humble early days growing up in Jamaica to his rise to global superstar and political activist, who would survive an assassination attempt on his life despite being a messenger of love .

Musician Ziggy Marley, the son of the reggae legend who serves as producer for the film, was on hand to introduce the trailer at the annual exhibition industry trade show.

“It’s great to be here today on behalf of this movie about my dad. I’m here as the producer of this film, but also as the trustee of my father’s incredible legacy,” said Ziggy Marley, 54, before adding, “This message of unity and love is as urgent as ever.”

The teaser, which has not yet been made public, begins with Peaky Blinders and One Night in Miami… star Kingsley Ben-Adir taking the stage as a reggae music icon in front of a huge audience that had gathered for one of his concerts, according to Slash movie.

Ben-Adir, 37, who scored the role after an extensive global casting search, reportedly looks perfect for the late singer, songwriter and activist who died of cancer in 1981 aged 36.

The trailer transitions from the concert scenario to Marley in his element in the recording studio with co-star Lashana Lynch as one of his backup singers, Rita Marley, who would eventually become his wife.

Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green from a screenplay by Zach Baylin, Frank E. Flowers and Terence Winter, the trailer also shows him sneaking loads of marijuana across international borders, along with scenes of him relaxing with his family and playing soccer, Variety reports.

There’s also a brief look at the harrowing 1976 assassination attempt that Marley survived, and concludes with one of the many messages Marley preached in his life and music: “One love, one heart, one destiny.”

Green is best known to many fans for directing the biographical sports drama film King Richard (2021), starring Will Smith as Richard Williams, the father and coach of legendary tennis players Venus and Serena Williams.

While Winter’s Hollywood resume includes the creator, writer and executive producer of the acclaimed HBO series Boardwalk Empire (2010-2014), and as the writer and executive producer of the groundbreaking HBO series The Sopranos (2000-2007).

In addition to Ben-Adir and Lynch, the film’s cast also includes James Norton, Tosin Cole, Anthony Welsh, Michael Gandolfini, Umi Myers, and Nadine Marshall.

On stage at CinemaCon 2023, Ziggy Marley promised that the biopic will help people “deepen their connection with Bob and properly honor Bob.”

Production on the filming, which began in December 2022 in London, England, has only just finished, so the premiere in theaters in the US is not expected until January 12, 2024.
