Bob Huggins ‘SIGNS OFF as West Virginia basketball coach’ after DUI indictment — a month after Hall of Famer made homophobic remarks on a radio show
Bob Huggins has reportedly resigned as West Virginia head coach after being arrested Friday for drunk driving.
According to CBS Sports, Huggins told his team on Saturday night that he will not be their coach for the coming season.
Stadium reported that staffers and coaches were in tears when Huggins broke the news.
The DUI incident comes a month after the Hall of Famer used a homophobic slur on a radio show.
According to the City of Pittsburgh Public Safety Blotter, police saw “a black SUV… in the middle of the road, blocking traffic” with the driver’s side door open and showing it had a “flat and shredded tire.”

Huggins reportedly failed multiple field sobriety tests and blew a blood alcohol content of .210
Officers asked Huggins to pull the car off the road to help with his flat tire, but he had trouble moving the car to allow other vehicles to pass.
As a result, the police flashed their lights and after questioning thought he was drunk.
Huggins failed standard field sobriety tests and was taken into custody without incident.
He was charged with drunk driving and released with an order to appear for a preliminary hearing at a later date.
In a statement, West Virginia University said they were “aware of an incident last night involving head basketball coach Bob Huggins, for which he was charged with drunk driving in the city of Pittsburgh.”
“We are gathering more information and will take appropriate action once the review is complete.”
According to a police criminal complaint, as found by CBS Sports’ Matt NorlanderHuggins performed a breathalyzer test after being transported to police headquarters and blew a .210 “after several failed attempts.”
This complaint says that upon observing his car – which was leased through WVU – Huggins’ tire was “shredded about 3/4 of the way” and the smell of alcohol was on his breath.

Officers also reportedly found several cans and bottles of beer in white garbage bags in the car.
When asked how he got to Pittsburgh, Huggins reportedly said he remembered stopping at a Burger King. After fumbling around and trying to find a receipt, he pulled out the receipt which showed he had bought food around 1:30pm. Officers arrived at the incident around 8:30 p.m.
This isn’t Huggins’ first DUI incident. He was previously arrested while head coach at the University of Cincinnati in 2004.
Huggins was under fire this offseason for issues leading up to this DUI — when he was caught on a Cincinnati radio show making homophobic comments.
Huggins had previously been charged with drunk driving while coaching at the University of Cincinnati
Speaking on Bill Cunningham’s radio show on WLWHuggins was referring to a time when rival Xavier fans'[threw] rubber penises on the floor and then [said] they didn’t do it, by god, they can get away with anything’.
After the radio host joked that it must have been “transgender night,” Huggins then said, “It was a Crosstown Shootout, yeah, no, what it was was all those motherfuckers, those Catholic motherfuckers I guess” before joking that they had those items threw because “they were jealous they didn’t have one.”
Huggins later apologized for his words and West Virginia chastised him. He was fined $1 million by the school and suspended for the first three games of the upcoming 2023-24 college basketball season.
