Bob Geldof repeatedly misunderstands Sam Smith on This Morning

‘Why didn’t Holly and Phil correct him?’: Fans were shocked when Bob Geldof repeatedly misread Sam Smith on This Morning

Fans have questioned why Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield didn’t weigh in after Bob Geldof repeatedly misread Sam Smith on Wednesday.

The singer appeared on Wednesday’s episode to discuss his thoughts on the cost of living crisis and pay tribute to late Boomtown Rats bandmate Garry Roberts.

However, the upcoming 40th anniversary of Band Aid was later talked about when he mentioned Sam and his part in the song which was released in 2014.

Sam revealed that they were non-binary in 2019 and asked people to use the pronouns they/them. However, Bob repeatedly referred to Sam as “he”.

Bob began, “Sam Smith, I remember him on the mic with his eyes closed, and he was singing the song, and I said, ‘Sam, it’s not the words.’ He goes, ‘Oh yeah, I’m sorry.’

Mistake: Bob Geldof repeatedly confused Sam Smith on Wednesday’s This Morning while reflecting on working with the singer for a Band Aid song in 2014

Bob continued, “And he says ‘I’m sorry,’ so he walks away, closes his eyes again, and starts singing the original words.” He said “Sam”, and he goes “oh yeah, sorry, every year at school I have to sing this song”.

Taking to Twitter after the segment shocked viewers, he wrote: ‘He’s on national TV and he talks about Sam Smith. You’d think someone would fill him in on Sam’s gender identity or at least correct him. Painful clock’;

“I’m sorry, but why didn’t Holly or Phillip tell Bob that he was confusing Sam Smith with gender?”; ‘Not Bob Geldof repeatedly misreading Sam Smith on live TV and evil Holly and Phil without correcting him…’

Other fans noted that Sam would have used “he/he” pronouns when working with Bob before coming out as non-binary, so it’s possible Sir Bob got himself confused.

MailOnline has contacted Bob’s representatives and ITV for comment.

It is not the first time that ITV has been criticized for mistaking the artist.

Earlier this month, Ranvir Singh referred to the non-binary star as “he” during a segment on Good Morning Britain.

The presenter, 46, made the mistake during an interview with fashion designer Harri, who created Sam’s infamous latex look for Saturday’s BRIT Awards.

Speaking to the designer, Ranvir said: “Still on Good Morning Britain: Harry Styles may have swept the board at the BRITs, but it was Sam Smith who stole the show in this dramatic latex balloon suit.”

Before continuing: ‘How did you get into it? Who designed it? And why did she choose…?

Quickly correcting himself Ranvir said: ‘Them! Why did you choose it?’

GMB presenter Richard Madeley, 66, made the mistake about Sam’s gender in January when debating whether or not the singer’s latest music video for I’m Not Here To Make Friends is too sexualized.

Co-anchor Susanna Reid, 52, corrected her mistake and apologized.

The Grammy winner changed their gender pronouns to they/them in 2019, confessing the following year that they hoped to be the wrong gender forever.

They said: ‘What is difficult is for people to change their vocabulary; that is very, very difficult. It takes time. Everyone makes mistakes. I will be misunderstood until the day I die’

“This is going to take a long, long time for people to not use gender in their vocabulary.”

Throwback: Fans noted that Sam would have used 'he/he' pronouns when working with Bob in 2014 before coming out as non-binary, so it's possible Sir Bob got himself confused.
