Boat catches fire under Sydney Harbour Bridge as chaos breaks out on the water
A boat has taken off almost directly under the Sydney Harbor Bridge, prompting a rescue effort from passing watercraft.
Emergency services received reports just after 10 a.m. Monday of a 30-foot sports cruiser with smoke pouring from the cabin near the south side of the bridge.
About half a dozen vessels, including two ferries, approached the boat to help nine passengers before it was submerged in water by a Port Authority fire boat.
The passengers found shelter on a barge before being taken to the NSW Marine Area Command.
A NSW Ambulance spokesperson said paramedics assessed the boat’s occupants did not need to be taken to hospital.
The fire brigade also arrived on the scene and boarded the boat after the fire was extinguished.

They discovered the fire had started in the ship’s engine room, but it is unknown what caused it, a NSW Fire and Rescue spokesperson said.
According to a spokesperson, the boat was towed away by the water police after an investigation by the fire brigade.
NSW Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
There’s more to come.
