BMW recalling more than 720,000 vehicles due to water pump issue
BMW is recalling more than 720,000 vehicles due to a problem with the water pump electrical connector that could potentially lead to a fire.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the recall involves some X1, X3 and X5 vehicles, as well as some other models.
The affected vehicles have water pumps with inadequate sealing, according to the NHTSA report, and may be susceptible to fluid infiltration at the electrical plug connector over time. There is a potential for short circuits to occur and a potential for fire, in rare cases.
Water pumps and connectors will be inspected and replaced if necessary. A shield will also be installed to divert fluid that could fall on the pump from the positive crankcase ventilation system’s intake air housing, the report said.
Vehicle owners are expected to receive a recall notice in October and are instructed to take their vehicles to an authorized BMW center to have the appropriate fixes performed free of charge.
