The creator of Bluey has announced he will be quitting the wildly popular Australian children’s animated series, leaving fans devastated.
Joe Brumm wrote a heartbreaking open letter to parents, confirming that ‘The Sign’ will mark his TV finale for the show, as he now focuses on Bluey’s first ever film, which will be released in cinemas around the world in 2027.
“I always said I wouldn’t keep making the show if I didn’t think I could make another season as good as the last one,” Brumm said.
“This would have been the case for me with a possible season four, so I have decided to take a break from my involvement with the TV series.
“In the event that I am unable to make more seasons myself, The Sign will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I have written it as such.”
The Australian animator and director explained how creating the highly successful, award-winning children’s show featuring fan-favorite Blue Heeler puppy “completely changed my life.”
“It was extremely satisfying to be a part of it, more than I can put into words,” he said.
“To walk away from it when it’s at such a height will seem crazy to some, but for now I’m finding it difficult to really go back to that four-to-six-year-old world and write authentically.”
The creator of Bluey has made a shock announcement that he will be pulling out of the wildly popular Australian children’s animated series, leaving fans devastated.
However, Brumm quickly reassured fans that the show would go on without him.
“To be clear, this is not an announcement about the end of the show, but it is an acknowledgment that my focus will be on the movie,” he said.
The director said his Bluey crew, along with the creative people in his life, supported his decision to step down from the TV series.
“Working with that amazing group of people has been the absolute highlight of my animation career and I hope having Bluey on their resume is a sign of pride for them,” he said.
Elsewhere in the letter, Brumm emphasized the “good news” about his upcoming plans.
“After some time away from the series and working on another project, an old idea resurfaced and before I knew it, I had written a Bluey feature script that I absolutely love,” he said.
“Fast forward through a ton of contracts and we’re about to start making an animated Bluey movie.”
Joe Brumm wrote a heartbreaking open letter to parents, confirming that ‘The Sign’ will mark his TV finale for the show, while he now focuses on Bluey’s first ever film, due out in 2027.
He thanked parents and children around the world for welcoming the wildly popular show into their homes.
“The whole experience is impossible to describe,” he said.
The unexpected announcement has shocked parents, with one mother telling FEMAIL: ‘WHAT! This is terrible news. The show won’t be the same without him.”
Thousands of mothers and fathers have flooded social media to express their heartbreak.
“I was excited about the movie… now I’m sad,” said one.
“I’m going to get sick,” another admitted.
“I’m actually crying right now,” one person revealed.
‘I read this to my daughter and she is crying with her eyes open. We weren’t ready for this,” another added.
The cartoon first appeared on television in 2018 and has since become popular with children and parents alike, winning numerous awards along the way.
Earlier this week, BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company announced that they are bringing Bluey’s first-ever animated film to the big screen, which will be written and directed by Brumm.
“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that,” Brumm said.
‘I always thought ‘Bluey’ deserved a feature film. I want this to be an experiential event that the whole family can enjoy together.”
