Bluey fans distraught as creator who based cartoon on his own family announces he is stepping away

Bluey fans are saddened after learning that the creator of the beloved animated series will be taking a step back to focus on the new film.

Creator Joe Brumm announced the “difficult” news via his blog, stating that the upcoming fourth season would continue without his involvement.

While viewers were happy to hear that the cartoon would be heading to theaters, fans were also disappointed to learn that Brumm would not be involved in the next season.

“I’ve always said that I wouldn’t continue making the show if I didn’t think I could make any new season as good as the last,” Brumm said in his announcement. “This would have been the case for me with a possible season four, so I have decided to take a break from my involvement with the TV series. Just in case I can’t stand to make more seasons myself, The Sign will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I’ve written it as such.”

‘Bluey has completely changed my life. It was an immensely satisfying thing to be a part of, more than I can put into words. To walk away from it when it’s at such a height will seem crazy to some, but for now I’m finding it difficult to really reach back into that four to six year old world and write authentically.

“My Bluey crew and all the creative people in my life completely understand my decision. Working with this amazing group of people has been the absolute highlight of my animation career and I hope having Bluey on their CV is a sign of pride for them.”

“NOOOOOOOOOOO JOE,” one person wrote. ‘It’s actually so sad that he’s leaving. But I know Jeffrey, Aspinwall, Pearson and everyone who works on this show will continue to make it great,” wrote another.

After the film hits the big screen, fans can also stream the film on Disney+, as well as ABC iview and ABC Kids in Australia.

Brumm expressed his excitement about the upcoming film. He said: “I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that.

‘I always thought that Bluey deserved a movie in the cinema. I want this to be an experiential event that the whole family can enjoy together. I’m thrilled to continue working with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new Bluey story to the big screen.”

The film will feature the voices of Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack as Bluey’s mother and father, Chilli and Bandit Heeler, along with music created by composer Joff Bush.

The CG-animated film is produced by award-winning animation producer Amber Naismith, with Richard Jeffery returning to co-direct the film.
