Blue Beetle is the first movie of James Gunn’s new DCU, which will unfold over the next ten years.
Gunn announced his slate for the major overhaul for the DC Universe in January.
He explained that “DC has been disconnected from film and television for a long time.”
“I have an incredibly deep connection to these characters, to these stories, and to the desire to create that kind of magic, not just in the kid I was, but in the bond I had with my dad, with friends later on.” Gunn explained.
He added, “And we want to create a united world in DC where we tell stories.”
Gunn mentioned Blue Beetle in his initial announcement, confirming that he would be an integral part of the foundation of the new universe.
In a June interview with the Inside of You podcast, Gunn revealed, “I mean, the first DCU character is definitely Blue Beetle.”
While talking to Total movieconfirmed director Angel: “We’re part of the universe, we’re part of the world, we’re part of the plans they’ve made for the future installments of the DCU, but we’re not tied to all the movies of the past.’
Even though it may not have had the strongest start at the box office, Blue Beetle has the potential to be a sleepy hit due to its rave reviews from audiences.
