Bizarre moment MSNBC host Jonathan Capehart pulls out tissue and cries in memory of the January 6 riots live on air, prompting his Capitol officer to awkwardly clear his throat

An MSNBC show took a bizarre turn when host Jonathan Capehart pulled out the Kleenex and started crying while recalling the memory of the January 6 riots live.

The emotional episode unfolded while Capeheart was busy with promotion former DC police officer Michael Fanone's book about the three-year anniversary of the January 6 insurrection at the Capitol.

When the TV host introduced Fanone at the start of the live show, he became visibly emotional and took out tissues to wipe away tears before the interview even started.

“I'm going to try to get through this… Thank you for what you did three years ago today…” he said before raising the tissue he had ready in his hand to his nose.

The unexpected display caused his Capitol Police officer to clear his throat and appear visibly uncomfortable.

The peculiar on-air moment got a lot of attention, but probably not the type the host and network were hoping for.

Collin Rug, co-owner of Trending Politics, took to X to post the clip, which was criticized by viewers online.

“The incident occurred while Capehart was promoting former DC police officer Michael Fanone's book. “I'm going to try to get through this… Thank you for what you did three years ago today… *sniff* 'State propaganda has reached a new level.'

The video received a lot of negative comments, but Capehart took to X to defend the emotional moment, sharing a video of it with the caption, “And I would do it again.”

“Reminds me of the crocodile tears @maddow started shedding over the 'migrant camps,'” one critic wrote. 'I have lost all sympathy for these people. If those tears are real, he should seriously reconsider his loyalty.”

“MSNBC: “We'll pay you a $30,000 bonus if you cry really well in tonight's propaganda segment!” a third user joked.

In 2021, on the eve of the twentieth anniversary of September 11, the same MSNBC host announced that he believed Trump supporters were a greater threat than the Taliban or ISIS.

Capehart called out “MAGA and the domestic threat” during an appearance on PBS NewsHour on Friday, which he said is far “more troubling than any foreign threat.”

The Washington Post columnist and news anchor went on to describe the past few years as “one giant step forward, and then two giant steps back.”

'A big step forward was the election of Barack Obama as president of the United States, the first black president. But a huge step back was the election of Donald Trump as president. Another huge step forward: the election of Joe Biden as President of the United States,” Capehart said.

“But another big step back, in my opinion, was the fact that even though Donald Trump lost the election, he got 15 to 12 million more votes than he did in 2016. So it just highlights the divisions within the country,” he added.

Capehart specifically cited the January 6 siege of the Capitol as a turning point in which MAGA supporters of former President Donald Trump violently invaded the Capitol building in Washington DC in an attempt to disrupt a joint session of Congress that was busy counting electoral votes in favor of Joe Biden.

'And then the ultimate step back, January 6. My colleague Carlos Lozada said on television this morning how ironic it is that on September 11, there were reports that the plane that crashed in Shanksville was headed toward the Capitol, on its way to crashing into the Capitol,” Capehart continued.

“And yet, nearly two decades later, the Capitol was ransacked by domestic terrorists who laid siege to the U.S. Capitol just as members of Congress were certifying the last election.”

John Yang, who hosted the interview, asked Capehart if he meant “that other forces have changed politics more since September 11th than after September 11th.”

'Oh, I think so. I think MAGA and the domestic terrorist threat are far more concerning than any foreign threat we may face.”

Social media reactions to the MSNBC host were largely negative, with most users expressing frustration with Capehart's views on MAGA politics and Islamic fanaticism.

“It's so frustrating when people with no national security experience talk about threats in numerical classifications or use phrases like 'of greater concern' in an attempt to politicize threats. Shouldn't we be focusing on ISIS and Al Qaeda right now? Come on man!' Charles Marino tweeted.

“The most worrying threats are ignorant MSNBC pundits like this fool. MSNBC's Jonathan Capehart: MAGA threat more worrying than ISIS or Taliban 20 years after 9/11,” another user wrote.
