BioWare apologizes for commemorative Commander Shepard corpse

Opening Mass effect 2 — where the beloved Normandy explodes and Commander Shepard is blasted into the expanse of space, dying moments later — is perhaps one of the most iconic and devastating first moments in video game history. And if you want to be constantly reminded of the pain, you can get a commemorative statue of Commander Shepard’s last moments. O joy!

The BioWare Gear store has released an official figurine of Commander Shepard’s lifeless corpse floating above the wreckage of Normandy. It’s the perfect companion to any figurine you have of your Shepherd’s love interest, if you want to remind them of the sheer pain of losing their best friend!

The official press release calls it a “conversation starter,” and boy is that true. Here’s another conversation starter: Why is it only available in the female Commander Shepard, and why is the pose so That? On the one hand, it may speak to how ubiquitous FemShep has become to the series. On the other hand, can you imagine BroShep in the same pose?

Only 2000 Death Statues are available, each with its own Certificate of Authenticity. The image is $135 and available on the BioWar Gear store.

Update (June 13): BioWare has canceled the pre-sale of the Commander Shepard Statue of Death. In an email, BioWare explained that the image was to be part of an entire series centered around “some of the most important and emotional moments” in the franchise.

The statue has been removed from the store, along with the T-shirt that also featured Shepard’s corpse and their birth and death dates – at least until further notice. Those who pre-ordered the item will be automatically refunded.

Earlier today we announced the sale of our newest Mass effect Shepard statue. This image was intended to be part of a series commemorating some of the most important and emotional moments in the series. The way we announced it didn’t convey that well, nor does it give the moment in the series the credit it deserves.

As a result, we’re pausing the sale of the image until we can share the bigger plan with you.
