A publicly accessible website appears to be selling a huge database of Discord chats to the highest bidder.
The site is called Spy.pet and claims to have received more than four billion public messages created by approximately 620 million users logged into more than 14,000 servers.
At first glance, it appears that there was no foul play involved as the data was already public, as Discord is essentially an IRC, meaning that with the right bots and automation, all the information could be collected.
Enterprise models
As for presentation, Spy.pet does an impressive job. It provides a profile for each individual user, which includes known aliases, connected accounts for services such as Steam or GitHub, Discord servers and public messages. To access the profile, a user only needs to pay a small fee (up to $0.10) in cryptocurrency.
There is also an “enterprise model,” which is advertised as being used in AI model training or for intelligence gathering by law enforcement agencies. However, this model requires the potential customer to contact the site administrators.
It has even caught the attention of Discord itself, which is reportedly looking into the matter to see if there is a terms of service violation.
Despite the information being seemingly free and simply scrubbed from the internet, Discord is still investigating it.
In a statement, the company said: “Discord is committed to protecting the privacy and data of our users. We are currently investigating this matter. If we determine that violations of our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines have occurred, we will take appropriate action. to enforce our policies. We cannot comment further as this is an ongoing investigation.”
