Billie Eilish reveals to pal Lana Del Rey she has never been broken up with – but insists that ending relationship with ‘somebody that you genuinely love is so horrible’

Billie Eilish has written many songs about love, but there is one thing she has never experienced: being dumped.

The 22-year-old Lunch hitmaker – who recently opened up about being ghosted – features in the latest edition of Interview magazine where she had a Q&A with fellow singer Lana Del Rey, 38.

The two touched on several topics, including Billie’s latest hit album Hit Me Hard And Soft, their band and romantic relationships.

Perhaps the biggest revelation of all is that the Bad Guy singer has never experienced the emotional pain of a breakup.

Billie said: ‘I really don’t like being out of control, I was going to say out of control, but there are ways I do like being out of control. I have a power problem and a control problem, and I also don’t like being vulnerable in a romantic way. It makes me uncomfortable, and I don’t know how many times I’ve really been in love.

“I think there are different versions of love, and I think you can be in love, but it might not be deep. I’m not going to go into too much detail because I’m going to be rude, but I’ve never been dumped, nor have I ever been in a fight. I just did the breakup.”

Lana insisted to Billie that this could mean the co-star is on the run from a relationship.

What was I made for? singer replied, “Sure. And I think when people hear that, they’re like, “Oh, all you’re doing is breaking hearts.” Sure, but that doesn’t mean people are completely innocent. It means I was like, “Oh, let me get out of here.” Or it means it just wasn’t right.’

Lana agreed with the fellow musician’s sentiments, as she said that when she breaks up with someone, it’s usually because “they made me do it.”

Billie further emphasized that ending a relationship takes a significant mental toll, even if it has never ended.

She explained, “Right? That’s what I’m saying. “You did this, b****.” [Laughs] Now some of you are about to get really mad at me, but I really believe that breaking up with someone versus breaking up – breaking up with someone clearly hurts, especially if you don’t see it arrive and you wanted a future and it is taken out of your hands.

“But honestly, the pain of knowing you have to end something with someone you really love is so terrible.”

Lana echoed Billie’s point and said she believes doing the split tasks stays with a person longer.

Billie said, “I think so too. And you don’t even get like, “I got dumped, so fuck you guys. I’m going crazy and I’m going to have a reaction and I’m mad at you. And I get to make an enemy of you guys.” , because you broke up with me.” You can’t do that. You can’t become a victim.”

Billie has had three public relationships, including the most recent with The Neighborhood singer Jesse Rutherford, 32, who she was first seen with in October 2022, before they split months later on May 17, 2023.

She also dated LA-based actor Matthew Tyler Vorce from 2021 to May 2022 and rapper Brandon Q Adams for less than a year from late 2018.

Billie and Lana also discussed her single Lunch – which was dubbed a ‘lesbian anthem’ by her fans – just months after discussing her sexuality.

Billie was asked if she wonders what people are going to say about the song to which she replied, “I’m pretty aware of what people are going to say. It’s so strange growing up and changing in front of the whole world.

“The craziest thing is I discover things about myself and then suddenly everyone knows about it, and I don’t even have time to think about how it makes me feel.”

Lana commented on Billie’s latest album as a whole and how the singer experiences a range of emotions throughout the project, but has always maintained a kind of cool and calm demeanor.

Billie replied, “Right? It’s interesting to be someone who isn’t outwardly a sensitive complainer. A lot of moments on this album involve situations where I thought, “I’d rather be tortured inside but have someone think I’m cool than have someone think I’m hysterical and actually express my feelings.”

Hit Me Hard And Soft was released on May 17 and is Billie's third studio album, as she has worked on all three projects with brother and frequent collaborator Finneas O'Connell.
