Bill Belichick ‘eyeing a return to NFL coaching next season’ – after one previously secret team considered him for defensive coordinator role

Bill Belichick is currently busy filling a variety of media roles, but the legendary former Patriots coach reportedly doesn’t expect that to happen next year.

The 72-year-old retired from New England earlier this year after 24 seasons and is now a contributor to the ‘Pat McAfee Show’ and ESPN’s Monday Night Football ‘Manningcast’ after failing to land a head coaching job during the offseason.

According to ESPN’s Adam SchefterBelichick wants to return as coach in 2025, but he is expected to be picky as he considers his next opportunity.

Belichick applied for the Atlanta Falcons head coaching position during the offseason, while 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan also indicated earlier this summer that he had offered the legendary coach a role as defensive coordinator.

But San Francisco wasn’t the only franchise considering Belichick as a defensive player. Schefter revealed that the Rams also had him on their shortlist following the departure of defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.

Bill Belichick is ‘fully invested’ in his role as head coach, says Tom Pelissero

Schefter’s reporting aligns with an earlier report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, who said Belichick was still “fully committed” to coaching.

He stays involved in the game,’ he began on the Rich Eisen Show in July. “He’s doing roasts. He’s going to be on ‘Inside the NFL.’ We’ve seen him at various events, in high school, at the Manning Passing Academy. We’ve seen him at the University of Washington, where his son Steve is now the defensive coordinator.”

“He’s going to try to remind you that he’s not Darth Vader,” Pelissero continued. “That there’s more to Bill Belichick. He’s done a good job of that so far with his media exposure.”

Ultimately, Belichick will be busy with his various media activities this season.

He will also appear on The CW’s “Inside the NFL,” have a football show on YouTube TV and will reportedly do a show with Manning every Friday, breaking down the upcoming Monday night game.

Some of his recent analysis has proven prophetic, such as when he explained that he was unimpressed with Caleb Williams’ preseason performances for the Bears.

The rookie went 10-20 against the Bills and Bengals, with Belichick saying his performance “wasn’t that good.”

And Williams also struggled in his regular-season debut for Chicago, completing just 14 of 29 passes for 93 yards.
