A number of household names from Australian sport and politics made their way to the official AFL Grand Final breakfast on Saturday in Melbourne – but the event’s title sponsor will cringe at one image that has the potential to go viral online.

Australian advocates of a safer drinking culture, DrinkWise sponsored the sold-out function – which started at 8am and cost $250 per ticket – and it wasn’t long before a faux pas came out of the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

When former North Melbourne Kangaroos coach Dani Laidley entered the room, a beer bottle was clearly visible on a table behind her.

Since the event was a breakfast and alcohol was consumed before 10am, this was not the kind of image DrinkWise would want to associate with their brand.

A-listers in attendance included AFL legends Jonathan Brown, Jarryd Roughead and Cameron Mooney, as well as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and opposition leader Peter Dutton.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had the audacity to call out AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan, who struggled to pronounce the last name of Melbourne Demons star Christian Petracca at the Brownlow Medal last Sunday.

“I would like to congratulate Gill on an outstanding career in the AFL,” the prime minister said of the outgoing football boss.

‘[However] I understand from Christian Petracca that you have some problems with Italian surnames.’

Albanian had not yet finished proclaiming the immigration policy of the now departed Morrison government.

He compared it to Friday’s AFL parade on the Yarra River, which was heavily criticized by footy fans.

The ironic comment was met with loud laughter – and even opposition leader Dutton was spotted smiling at the jibe.

Albanian then had another dig at Morrison, alluding to how the former prime minister secretly swore himself into several wallets when the leader of Australia.

“I’m really concerned that when I was away in London last week, Richard Marles was the acting Prime Minister, so I’m afraid he’s sworn in as Minister of the Cats and approved yet another refurbishment of Kardinia Park,” he joked. he.

Nick Riewoldt, St Kilda’s great Fox Footy commentator, interviewed McLachlan about his time in charge of the code, which began in 2014 when he succeeded Andrew Demetriou – having previously served as his deputy.
