Big Brother viewers divided on Matty’s ‘open relationship propaganda’ as he tells Olivia to change her perspective on non-monogamous unions: ‘You just see it as a preventative of cheating’

Big Brother’s Matty divided the opinion of viewers as he told his co-star Olivia that she needs to change her view on open relationships during Sunday’s episode.

The doctor (24) spoke positively about sexually non-monogamous marriages or relationships in which both parties are happy that their partner sleeps with other people.

Matty, who described himself as a ‘hippie’ who likes to ‘live free’ before entering the house last week, suggested Olivia should open her mind to open relationships despite not being able to imagine herself in such a situation .

Matty told Olivia: “The way you look at it is like an open relationship is to prevent cheating so no one gets hurt, but if you change your perspective, an open relationship gives you the freedom to pursue other people instead of preventing cheating.”

When Olivia asked how he learned his approach to open relationships, Matty replied, “Oh Olivia, it’s not easy to learn! It’s rewiring your brain and rewiring everything you learned as a child.’

Olivia said: ‘It confuses me! How do you learn that?’

She continued: ‘You know what else I find crazy? How openly and freely you can talk about it. It’s unbelievable to me.’

Matty told her, “For me, because it’s so normal, there’s no taboo. But maybe for people who have never heard of it before there can be a taboo around the subject.’

When asked by Olivia if his mother knew about his open relationships, Matty said of his mom and his partner’s parents: “Yeah, my mom knows, his parents know. They just say “do whatever makes you happy”.’

Olivia said, “That’s such forward thinking,” to which Matty replied, “Yes, it is. I am very happy. I have a very prosperous family.’

Speaking about his relationship, he said: ‘At the core of our relationship we just want each other to be happy.’

The moment divided opinion among viewers, with many fans of the show taking to Twitter to voice their opinion on the conversation.

Someone else asked: ‘Why do people in open relationships feel the need to always bring this up as if it’s a personality trait.’

While someone else posted: “So what ITV thinks is fun for us is learning these two are in open relationships? Um, no thanks.’

Another viewer wrote: “Mati is in an open relationship? I’ve never understood this idea to each their own, but it’s not for me! If you’re in a good relationship, the idea of cheating is a no-brainer!’

And someone else noted: ‘I’ve never been keen on open relationships and Matty’s explanation still wouldn’t have convinced me.’

“I was really trying to like Matty, but it’s even harder for me to like Matty now after he talked about open relationships,” admitted another fan of the show.

While someone else wrote: ‘Mati is someone I really relate to. He is someone I would go on a night out with. He is someone I would definitely hang out with. As someone who is also open in relationships, it’s so refreshing to be in a relationship with someone on reality TV.’

Impressed by Matty’s views, another viewer said: “Matty’s ENM chat gives me life. “You flipped everything you were taught as a child about relationships ‘Yes, yes and yes.’

Someone else wrote: “Nice to hear Matti talk about open relationships in an intelligent way. It’s had both open and shut in the past and it feels like it’s still strangely stigmatized despite the fact that it shouldn’t be of interest to anyone but those involved.’

And another viewer posted: ‘Open relationships are healthy’, while someone else said: ‘Open relationships are just childish.’

Big Brother continues on Monday at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
