Big Bash season OVER for Cameron Bancroft after horror on-field collision – as Sydney Thunder teammate Daniel Sams also remains in Perth hospital

  • An incident occurred on Friday during the BBL clash in Perth
  • Both players taken to hospital after incident
  • Bancroft broke his shoulder and nose

Cameron Bancroft’s BBL season is officially over after the Sydney Thunder opener suffered a broken shoulder and nose in his horror collision with teammate Daniel Sams.

Bancroft and Sams were both still in hospital in Perth on Saturday morning after their sickening on-field collision during the Thunder’s last-ball victory over the Scorchers.

The pair are awaiting the rest of the CT scans, but Sams will also be sidelined for at least 12 days after he and Bancroft were diagnosed with concussion.

Both players will also spend at least another night in Western Australia as they are unable to fly to Brisbane with the rest of their teammates.

Thunder GM and Channel 7 commentator Trent Copeland said during day two of Australia’s fifth Test against India that the club would fly Sams’ wife Danii to Western Australia to be with him in hospital.

Bancroft also has to recover from the incident with a broken nose, with a shadow now hanging over the rest of his home summer.

The horror of the collision came as another remarkable story emerged, with Oliver Davies rushing out of the hotel to act as concussionist.

Still feeling unwell, Davies scored three off eight balls, but the Thunder continued to chase Perth’s 4-177 from the final ball of the match.

The win moved the Thunder into second place on the BBL ladder with a match in hand, after winning just one match all season.

But the men in lime green will probably pass on the costs of Friday evening.

Bancroft’s injury caps a horror summer for the West Australian, who began the battle for a Test spot before his form dropped at the worst possible time.

The Thunder will get Sam Konstas back shortly after the Sydney Test, but are likely to go into the final without him or Bancroft if Konstas is picked for the Sri Lanka tour.

Sams is also one of the Thunder’s most important players, given his swing on the ball and ability to hit hard late.

The all-rounder will miss at least the next four games for the Thunder, with any return date depending on how he recovers from his concussion.

For now at least, the Thunder are confident he has not suffered any further serious injuries after he was found lying on his stomach on the Optus Stadium turf and had to be taken to hospital.

After the collision, play was stopped for five minutes, with Sams being treated by medical staff and an ambulance crew on the field.
