Big Bash League: Nic Maddinson almost out in bizarre fashion for Melbourne Renegades

Melbourne Renegades heavy hitter Nic Maddison trudges thinking he’s out when the balls ignite when UNO falls, but is saved when replays show neither bat nor ball was NEAR the stumps!

  • The Big Bash were handed a rare wicket on Thursday night in Cairns
  • The zinger balls flew off the stumps even though neither the ball nor the man touched them.
  • Nic Maddinson walked away but was given a reprieve by the third referee.

Melbourne Renegades star Nic Maddinson had to be called to the fold on Thursday night after thinking he was sacked in the most bizarre circumstances seen at the Big Bash.

Maddinson, traveling very well on 42 runs from 26 balls, sweetly hit Mark Steketee’s short delivery to get close to the limit as the Renegades tried to rack up runs against the Brisbane Heat.

However, he was stunned when he turned to see lighted windows and a bail on the ground.

Maddinson started to pick himself up off the ground before replays indicated that his feet and bat, as well as the ball, were nowhere close to making contact with the stumps when he took the shot.

Somehow, the bail had mysteriously dislodged itself.

‘Oh, what happened there? What comes out? The bails have just been released,” Ian Smith, a former New Zealand goalkeeper, told Fox Cricket.

‘All I can think of is that when his back foot turned and made contact with the ground, it shook him. Maybe he wasn’t as stable, because it seemed that when he got his back foot closer to the stumps, the bail fell off.

‘Who knows? Chilling.’

Maddinson scored 87 runs in 49 deliveries to set the Heat a target of 167, with Sam Harper and Andre Russell scoring 21 and 35 runs respectively.
