President Joe Biden scored early victories in the Iowa caucus and the Virginia primaries on Super Tuesday.

Biden also won Vermont, where 16 delegates were up for grabs.

Virginia was the biggest prize of early voting Tuesday, with 99 delegates at stake. It’s a state where Biden had a 10 percentage point lead over Donald Trump in 2020, and a state he needs to cover in his November column.

Barack Obama became the first Democrat to win the state since 1964, when he carried the state with Biden in 2008.

Biden received the support of more than 11,000 Iowa Democrats in unofficial reports posted on the Hawkeye State party’s website Tuesday evening.

That happened while challenger Rep. Dean Phillips received the support of 362 Iowans, while Marianne Williamson received 268. “Uncommitted” was supported by 480, following a strong “uncommitted” effort in Michigan that got 13 percent of the vote.

That gave the president a convincing 90 percent victory in Iowa, as did the national Democratic Party stripped Iowa of its early caucus status after the 2020 census fiasco, while South Carolina was given the coveted first-in-the-nation status.

That ended the tradition of fierce campaigning and sign-wielding volunteers and supporters packing arenas all winter in a match with excessive national stakes.

President Joe Biden was expected to clear more delegates on Super Tuesday. He was heavily favored over lesser-known opponents in the Iowa caucuses

This year, the caucus took place entirely by post, with the results announced on a party website with almost no fanfare.

The showing would give Biden all fourteen of the state’s delegates.

Voting by mail was intended as a way to get Iowans, even with work or family conflicts, participating.

Iowans could fill out preference cards for the president, Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips, and Marianne Williamson, who suspended her campaign after defeating Phillips in Michigan. As in Michigan, “uncommitted” was an option.

Iowa’s results on Super Tuesday were expected to set off a flood of information paving the way for 2024, with other early results expected in Virginia, North Carolina and other states.

According to State Party Chair Rita Hart asked about 19,000 Iowa Democrats for preferential ballots, more than 12,000 of which were returned as of Tuesday morning, for a 63 percent return rate, weareiowa.com reported.

That’s out of nearly 467,000 registered Democrats, with a paltry 2.5 percent return.

It was the first result since more than 100,000 Democrats in Michigan chose “uncommitted” over Biden amid anger over US policy toward Israel and the war in Gaza.

Iowa Democrats announced the results as 15 other states and one U.S. territory held elections.

It came on a night when Biden’s rival former President Donald Trump was expected to dominate in the Republican primaries but likely fall short of the delegates needed to retain the Republican nomination until perhaps next week.

The totals could change slightly as ballots postmarked Tuesday are counted.
