President Joe Biden will meet with Vietnamese officials on Sept. 11, visit a memorial to an old friend and celebrate the anniversary of the attacks on an Alaskan air base.
The White House has released details of its public schedule for the 22nd anniversary of the attacks following Biden’s departure on Thursday for India, where Biden will attend the G20 summit with foreign leaders.
Details of his second stop, in Vietnam, are only just emerging. It’s part of the journey that Biden first revealed at a fundraiser last month.
Biden and McCain were friends in the Senate who served together for many years, although Biden was on Barack Obama’s lottery defeating the late Arizonan.

McCain was shot down over Hanoi in 1967 and subsequently spent five years in a Vietnamese POW camp.
The White House has already received questions about Biden’s September 11 schedule in the US. He will not attend any of the memorial services at the three attack sites — the first time a US president has failed to do so. Biden himself has attended multiple September 11 services in the past.
Instead, on the anniversary of Sept. 11, he will “make remarks to military personnel, first responders and their families” in Anchorage, where he has a fuel stop, according to the White House.

Due to the travel time and a full day of activities, this event is expected to occur hours after the first plane hit Manhattan’s South Tower.
Earlier, Biden will meet with CEOs along with Vietnamese Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính. He also meets President Võ Văn Thưởng of Vietnam, and attends a luncheon.
That comes after he met with the country’s top leader, General Secretary Nguyễn Phú Trọng of the Communist Party of Vietnam on Saturday.
