Biden says he supports the US justice system and has “faith” in the New York Police Department

President Joe Biden said on Monday that he has “faith” in the New York police department and the US justice system as New York braces for unrest ahead of former President Donald Trump’s arraignment on Tuesday.

Biden had traveled to a Minneapolis suburb Monday afternoon to present the $1 billion green technology investment from engine maker Cummins Inc. enabling the company to produce low- to zero-carbon engines.

While touring the facilities with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Senator Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith and Representative Ilhan Omar, Biden was asked if he was concerned about unrest.

“No, I have faith in the New York Police Department,” the president replied.

When asked if he had faith in the American justice system, the president answered yes.

Thursday’s indictment of Trump over his role in Stormy Daniels’ hush money scheme was a historic first, as no other former president has faced criminal charges.

Trump and his Republican allies have portrayed the grand jury’s decision to indict as politically motivated, as Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is a Democrat.

For weeks, Trump has been urging his supporters to “protest” the charges — New York is preparing for unrest.

Biden has tried to stay above the fray and offered “no comment” Friday morning when asked about Trump’s charges as he left the White House for a tornado-ravaged part of Mississippi.

But the White House said earlier Monday they were prepared for political turmoil surrounding Trump’s arraignment.

“We’re watching this closely, as you would expect,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters on a phone call Monday.

“We’ll be prepared if the need arises, but hopefully we won’t,” Kirby continued. Violence has no place in the United States. Peaceful protest has great value in our democracy.’

One of Trump’s closest allies in Congress, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, said she plans to lead a demonstration in New York on Tuesday in support of Trump.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams warned Greene and other MAGA believers to be on their best behavior.

“While we don’t have specific threats, people like Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is known to spread misinformation and hate speech, have stated that she is coming to town,” New York’s mayor said at a news conference.

While you’re in town. Be on your best behavior,” Adams said. “As always, we do not allow violence or vandalism of any kind. And if someone is caught participating in violence, they will be arrested.’

“While there may be some rioters who are thinking about coming to our town tomorrow, our message is clear and simple: Control yourself,” Adams said. New York City is our home, not a playground for your misplaced anger. We are the safest major city in America because we respect the rule of law in New York City.”
