Biden opens his State of the Union with a mistake: President calls Chuck Schumer ‘minority leader’ and loses Super Bowl joke in rocky start to speech

  • Biden called Schumer the Senate ‘minority leader’ in the slow start to his speech
  • He corrected himself and headed back on track in a direction dominated by jeers.
  • Trump jumped on the mistake, said: ‘Big hit on Schumer’

President Joe Biden got off to a rocky start to his State of the Union address Tuesday night by opening with a clumsy joke and a gaffe.

Biden called Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer the “minority leader,” when he’s in the majority, after stumbling over first lady Jill’s Super Bowl arrival next week.

“You may need a court order,” Biden quipped to Chief Justice John Roberts. “She’ll be able to go to the game… next week,” Biden continued, referring to Jill.

“I have to stay home,” Biden said with a laugh: “I have to figure something out here.”

“And congratulations to Chuck Schumer,” Biden said. ‘Another, uh, you know, another term as Senate Minority Leader.’

Biden then paused and corrected himself.

‘You know, I think you er… only this time you have a slightly larger majority, Mr. Leader. Are you a much bigger majority leader?

Schumer responded by holding up a finger, indicating that the Democrats had expanded their majority by one to 51 seats after the midterm elections.

The mistake was jumped on by former President Donald Trump, who said: ‘Big misstep by Schumer. He called him minority leader. I can not do this! Every time he goes off script, he’s making a mistake. Hopefully it gets better!

In a summary of the speech on his Truth Social app, Trump added that Biden was having a hard time getting words out, despite being credited by fake news with one of the greatest speeches of all time.

‘I’m looking forward to seeing him improve. Come on, Joe, you can do it!

The rest of Biden’s speech was dominated by Republicans who booed him for claiming that the GOP wants to get rid of Medicare and Social Security.

Another Republican said ‘it’s your fault’ when Biden condemned the rise in drug overdose deaths due to fentanyl floods at the border.

He also declared war on the richest Americans by calling for a minimum tax for billionaires, attacked oil executives and called again for an assault weapons ban.

The president began his speech by telling Republican President Kevin McCarthy that he was “looking forward to working with him.”

He also said that COVID “no longer” ruled the lives of Americans and waited almost an hour to mention the Chinese spy balloon that flew over the United States.
