President Joe Biden suffered his first defeat in a Democratic primary when he lost the American Samoa caucus to unknown candidate Jason Palmer on Tuesday evening.
The president was defeated in the small U.S. territory in the South Pacific, which receives no Electoral College votes but can send Democratic delegates to this summer’s convention.
American Samoa has just six delegates, with Palmer expected to earn four and Biden two.
Palmer is an investor from Baltimore but has spent time on the island in recent days, his campaign said.
During the 2020 Democratic primaries, American Samoa was the only contest won by billionaire Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor of New York City.

Palmer’s claim to fame, his campaign said in a press release, is that he is the first presidential candidate to release a speaking, AI-powered version of himself.
The 52-year-old hopeful previously worked at Microsoft, Kaplan Education, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and is a graduate of Harvard Business School.
His victory comes as Biden has two better-known challengers, Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips and self-help guru Marianne Williamson, who bounced back into the primary on Wednesday after garnering more votes than Phillips in the Michigan primary.
Before Palmer’s victory, Biden lost two delegates in a no-commit vote, a protest vote over the president’s support for Israel, while civilians are being killed in Gaza.
