President Joe Biden praised gains in U.S. manufacturing on Thursday during a trip to Syracuse — where he claimed gas prices had fallen compared to when he took office, when in fact they are higher.
“We’re down $1.25 since the peak this summer, and they’ve fallen over the past three weeks as well, adding up to a real savings for families today,” Biden said.
“The most common gas price in America is $3.39 lower than over $5 when I took office,” he continued.
The average cost of a gallon of gasoline at the AAA site was $3.76 Thursday. When he took office, it averaged $2.39 — or about half of what he said it was then — according to the Energy Information Institute.

Prices rose from the spring of 2020 after the pandemic eased before Biden took office, due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, and peaked in July — causing political headaches for Biden and Democrats.
He also accused Shell Oil of abusing its record profits announced Thursday. The company previously said its third-quarter profit was nearly $9.45 billion. Biden accuses oil companies and refiners of not passing on savings to consumers.
Biden made the comments during a trip to Syracuse, New York, where he studied law and met his first wife, Nelia Hunter. Many relatives were present. It came as the Democrats struggled to maintain control of Congress.
His party is facing headwinds, even in blue states like New York, and Biden tore Donald Trump on the economy amid criticism that Democrats placed too much emphasis on abortion issues after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.
“The previous president made a series of broken promises in places like Wisconsin, Indiana and Ohio,” Biden said. ‘On my watch we have fulfilled our agreements. On my watch, made in America isn’t just a slogan, it’s reality.’
“My predecessor was the first president since Herbert Hoover, no joke, who lost jobs throughout his administration,” he said. That reference included the 2.9 million jobs lost, with the pandemic wiping out previous job gains.

Biden praised Micron Technology Inc.’s plans. to invest up to $100 billion in computer chip production, praising the Chips & Science Act. One of the key authors, Majority Leader Senator Charles Schumer, was in attendance, as was Senator Kyrsten Gillibrand (DN.Y.).
Previously, Biden attended Onondaga Community College and toured Micron Pavilion, along with Micron President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, and Central & Northern New York Trades Council President Greg Lancette.
