With a potential influx of Haitians heading for the US border, the Biden administration is considering sending these migrants to a third country — or even expanding the capacity of facilities at Guantanamo Bay for storage and processing, a new report reveals.

Located in the southwestern part of Cuba on a US naval base, Guantanamo Bay is notorious for its detention camp for suspected terrorists.

Documents reviewed by NBC News show internal building plans that would be roughly double the area used for decades to house migrants picked up in the Caribbean.

Separated from the detention area, the Migrant Operations Center at Guantanamo Bay has been used for more than 30 years to house migrants picked up by the US Coast Guard in the area.

Currently, the center’s capacity is 400 beds.

The report comes amid shocking New CBS News/YouGov poll that shows that 45 percent of Democrats put the interests of “recent immigrants” above those of “current American citizens.” Only 15 percent of Democrats say they prioritize current Americans and 40 percent say they weigh interests equally.

New poll shows nearly half of Democrats believe the interests of “recent immigrants” should be placed above those of “current US citizens”

Republicans have the completely opposite mentality: 64 percent think the interests of today’s citizens should be prioritized and only 7 percent say it should be the other way around. Nearly 3 in 10 say they see interests as equal.

Figures released this month show that in fiscal year 2022, a huge record number of 2.37 million migrants were found through customs and border protection.

Migration isn’t slowing down, and polls released Sunday show 59 percent of voters think Democrats will move to “open the US-Mexico border” if they retain control of Congress after the election. 2022 by-elections on November 8.

New poll numbers from ABC News/Ipsos Also released on Sunday, it appears that 31 percent of registered voters think legal immigration should be reduced compared to 42 percent who want it to be kept at current levels.

Two US officials told NBC that the White House, along with its Gitmo expansion plans, is also considering sending these Haitian migrants to a third “lily pad” country.

The White House National Security Council asks the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) how many Haitian migrants it takes for the US to designate a third country as a holding and processing place for those banned at sea. They also look at numbers on how many Haitian migrants would overwhelm a “lily pad” country.

If this number were to be reached, Haitian migrants would have to be taken to the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the document said.

The US expects a mass exodus of Haitian migrants moving north after violent mobs attempted to overthrow the island’s government in September.
