Donald Trump formally accepted the Republican nomination for president on Thursday night with a lengthy speech in which he revisited the assassination attempt and returned to attacks on old enemies.
President Joe Biden is still fighting for his political survival after a disastrous 48 hours that saw him diagnosed with COVID and Democratic leaders tell him he must withdraw from the 2024 race.
Biden’s campaign chairman acknowledges there’s work to be done, but notes the president is in the race to win it

Biden campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon acknowledged Friday that the president’s re-election campaign still has some work to do, but said there has only been a “small” decline in the polls.
O’Malley Dillon appeared on MSNBC’s Morning Joe and admitted the campaign has struggled since Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump.
“I’m not here to say that these haven’t been tough weeks for the campaign. They certainly have been, and we’ve certainly seen some backsliding in support, but it’s been a small movement,” she said.
“The American people know the president is older. They see that. They knew that before the debate. Yes, of course we have a lot of work to do to make sure that we reassure the American people that he is old, but he can get the job done and he can win.”
She also claimed that Trump is “the same person as he was in 2020.”
“Donald Trump is at his peak with his numbers. There’s no. There’s no new voter that he’s bringing to the table. Right? So that’s an important kind of framework to remember. And we’re about to go into our convention.”
She brushed aside questions about whether Biden’s continued presence would hurt Democrats further down the ballot, saying the party has fielded “extraordinary Democratic candidates in the swing states and the non-swing states.”
“The president knows better than anyone how to fight and win locally.”
And, she noted, Biden plans to win.
“You’ve heard it straight from the president before. He’s in this race to win and he’s our nominee and he’s going to be our president for a second term.”
Donald Trump team prepares for race without Joe Biden
As he put the finishing touches on a record-breaking RNC speech last night, political advisers to former President Donald Trump were already busy strategizing for his campaign against someone other than the current Democratic nominee, President Joe Biden.
Trump aides gathered at the Trade Hotel next to the Fiserv Forum to consider who Vice President Kamala Harris might choose as her running mate if she replaces Biden on the ballot. Politico reported.
MAGA Inc., the main pro-Trump super PAC, has been researching the opposition and testing messaging against potential Biden replacements, the outlet reported.
That group includes Harris, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and even billionaire TV personality Mark Cuban, one expert told Politico.
Another Trump-aligned super PAC, the outlet reported, commissioned a poll on how Trump would fare against Harris and said the data showed Harris would fare worse against Trump than Biden — contradicting some other survey results so far.
Another Democrat calls on Biden to withdraw: Illinois Congressman Sean Casten says it’s ‘time to pass the torch’
Illinois Congressman Sean Casten is the latest Democrat in the House of Representatives to demand that Biden withdraw from the presidential race.
Casten (IL-06) wrote an opinion piece for the Chicago Tribune calling for the 81-year-old to retire with “all the dignity and decency that have characterized him during his half-century of public service.”
He urged the beleaguered Biden, who has COVID, to step aside so he can “consolidate” his legacy as the president who saved our democracy in 2020.
Casten added that Joe should make way for “trustworthy hands” in 2024 who can “continue his legacy.”

Biden Aware of Crowdstrike IT Outage
By Emily Goodin, Senior White House Correspondent
President Joe Biden has been briefed on the IT outage that is causing chaos worldwide, disrupting air travel, operations and other operations.
The outage has been attributed to CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity company whose software is used by numerous industries around the world to protect themselves from hackers.
A software update resulted in crashes of machines running the Microsoft Windows operating system. It is not considered a cyberattack.
“The President has been briefed on the CrowdStrike outage and his team is in contact with CrowdStrike and the affected entities. His team is working throughout the day in the interagency to get sector-by-sector updates and stands ready to assist as needed,” a White House official said.
Donald Trump shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks ‘searched online for Princess of Wales’
By Emily Goodin, Senior White House Correspondent
Donald TrumpThe potential killer had been investigating the Princess of Wales posted online before trying to assassinate the former president, it was reported today.
US police made the discovery about his apparent fixation on the British royal family after they searched Crooks’ home and seized his electronic devices following his attack in Pennsylvania last Saturday.
AOC: Democratic plan to oust Biden will also oust Kamala
Democratic Squad member Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took to Instagram Live last night to voice her dismay at her party’s efforts to remove President Joe Biden from the nomination list, warning that many of those who want him out also want Vice President Kamal Harris removed from the nomination list.
“If you think there is a consensus among the people who want Joe Biden out … that they will support Vice President Harris, you are mistaken,” she told her viewers.
And AOC called Democrats who gave anonymous quotes about Biden to reporters “nonsense.” She said elected officials in her party who claim a loss to Donald Trump is a fait accompli should give up their seats.
“My community does not have the option to lose,” the New York socialist said.
“If they come out and say all their little things in the background, off the record, but they’re not completely honest, then I’ll be honest with them. I’m in these rooms. I see what they’re saying in conversations,” the congresswoman said.
“A lot of them aren’t just interested in removing the president. They’re interested in removing the entire ticket.”
Trump Jokes About ‘Graph That Saved My Life’
Donald Trump joked that the graph “saved my life” by turning his head as his would-be assassin Thomas Matthew Crooks exchanged bullets at his rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
During his speech at the end of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on Thursday, the former president was able to joke about the assassination attempt, after becoming emotional earlier in his speech while recounting the attack.
Trump detailed the events he experienced at his last rally and said he would never talk about it again because it was “too painful.”
“Not even four years ago, I gave this administration the strongest border in American history,” Trump said. “But you can see on the chart that my life was saved — that was the chart that saved my life.”
“I said, ‘Look at this.’ I’m so proud of it. I think it’s one of the best — it was done by Border Patrol — one of the best graphs I’ve ever seen. It showed everything exactly — you know the graph.”
At one point, Trump seemed to realize the graph was on the screens behind him in the Fiserv Forum.
“Oh, there it is. That’s pretty good. Wow,” the former president praised.
“The last time I put that chart up, I never really looked at it,” he joked. “But without that chart, I wouldn’t be here today. I never looked at it.”
‘I never saw it that day.’
Little Trump steals the show for Grandpa Donald’s big speech
Donald Trump’s youngest of 10 grandchildren sat on his lap Thursday as her father Eric gave a speech at the Republican National Convention — and stole the show.
The final night of the convention welcomed Trump’s largest entourage of family members, including Eric and Lara Trump’s children Carolina, 4, and Luke, 6 – and former first lady Melania Trump.
All of Trump’s children were in the arena’s guest area except Barron, but the father of five claimed the 18-year-old was there.
Carolina clapped as she sat on Trump’s lap, while her older brother Eric Luke cheered on their father as he sat on mother Lara’s lap.
