Biden and Democrats report raising $90 million-plus in March, stretching their cash lead over Trump

WILMINGTON, Del.– President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign and the Democratic National Committee said Saturday they raised more than $90 million in March and ended the first quarter of the year with more than $192 million in cash, boosting their cash advantage over Donald Trump and Republicans has increased even further.

The Biden campaign and its affiliates reported raising $187 million from January through March and said 96% of all donations were less than $200.

That total was boosted by the more than $26 million Biden reportedly raised at a March 28 event at Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan, attended by former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Trump expects to raise $43 million for his campaign when major donors gather at the Florida home of billionaire investor John Paulson on Saturday. That would set a record for fundraising at a single event.

Biden’s campaign says the pace of donations has allowed it to undertake major digital and television advertising campaigns in key states and work with the DNC and state parties to better mobilize potential supporters before the November election.

The campaign said the March 31 raise of more than $192 million was the highest total ever by any Democratic candidate. About 1.6 million people have donated to the campaign since Biden announced in April 2023 that he was seeking a second term. The campaign raised more than $10 million in the 24 hours after the president’s State of the Union address in early March.

“The money we’re raising is historic, and it will go towards the critical work of building a winning operation focused solely on the voters who will decide this election – offices across the country, staff in our battleground states and a paid voter media program meet them where they are,” Biden campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez said in a statement. She mocked “Trump’s cash-strapped operation, which diverts limited and billionaire-dependent funds to pay for his various legal fees.”

Trump faces four separate criminal charges. He and the Republican National Committee reported raising $65.5 million in March and had $93.1 million on hand. As a sitting president in 2020, Trump had a huge campaign chest when he lost to Biden.

Trump campaign officials have said they don’t expect to raise as much as Democrats, but will have the money they need. The Biden campaign says the strong fundraising shows enthusiasm for the president, despite his low approval ratings and polls showing most voters would prefer no rematch in 2020.
