Biden advisers ‘hope Donald Trump DOES win GOP nomination because they think Joe has a better chance of beating 45th president than Nikki Haley’

Despite polls showing he would lose to one of the three remaining Republican Primary candidates, advisers to President Joe Biden are hoping he will win a rematch against Donald Trump in the general election.

Biden said Tuesday that Trump is the “clear frontrunner” for the Republican nomination with his victory in the Iowa caucus, arguing that the 2024 contest will be “me versus MAGA Republicans.”

“It looks like Donald Trump just won Iowa. He is the clear frontrunner on the other side at the moment. But the point is, this election was always going to be you and me versus extreme MAGA Republicans. It was true yesterday and it will be true tomorrow,” Biden wrote on his social media accounts.

It appears those close to Biden think a second fight between the two is Biden’s best chance to win, rather than against Nikki Haley or Ron DeSantis.

“Some Democrats support Trump,” admitted Jennifer Palmieri, Hillary Clinton’s communications director in her failed 2016 race against Trump. the New York Times.

She felt it would be better for the country if Republicans defeated him themselves and believed Biden had a chance to be DeSantis or Haley.

The Times cited Democratic successes in the 2022 midterm tossup races, with the left often fielding MAGA-oriented candidates in the primaries who lost in November, as a reason why some close to Biden are favoring Trump in the primaries.

They even went so far as to say that “none of them would cry” if Trump got rid of Haley sooner or later.

But former Democratic strategist Mo Elleithee believes the Democrats who favor Trump are playing a dangerous game.

“The polarization in our politics means it will be close either way,” he said. “Stop trying to figure out who you want to campaign against and start focusing on the man you’re campaigning for. Either way, the stakes will be high.”

Faiz Shakir, senior adviser to Sen. Bernie Sanders, called anyone who hoped Trump would win the primaries “crazies.”

‘Be careful what you wish for. He is undoubtedly generating enthusiasm among the electorate, which makes turnout concerns crucial for Biden.”

Recent polls show that President Biden would face any of the three remaining Republican candidates.

A questionnaire conducted by CBS News and YouGov shows Biden trailing former President Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the former UN ambassador. Nikki Haley.

Haley is doing best against Biden, beating the 81-year-old president nationally by eight points.

The ex-ambassador and former governor of South Carolina attracts more moderates and independents, as well as voters with a college degree, in her column than Trump.

Yet Trump beats Biden by two points, while DeSantis leads by three points.

Haley has risen in the polls in both Iowa and New Hampshire but is still considered a long shot against Trump, who has a substantial lead in all early primaries and in national surveys.

But if she were to defeat the former commander-in-chief, she could erase Biden’s advantage over women, the CBS/YouGov poll found, and earn a share of Biden’s 2020 support base.

Haley agrees with Biden on some important qualities of voters — including those who look for a president who shows empathy and those who want to see a president who is open to compromise.

Biden leads both Trump and DeSantis in those qualities.

Haley is also seen by survey respondents as being just as tough as Trump and DeSantis.

And for voters who want toughness as a key characteristic in a president, she leads Biden by 20 points in a general election race against the Democrat.

Trump’s legal troubles don’t seem to be motivating his supporters to look elsewhere in the Republican primaries.

The ex-president is currently facing 91 criminal charges.

Forty-two percent of Trump voters said they haven’t even considered the criminal charges, while another 35 percent said they would vote for the ex-president to show support against the criminal charges.

Only 23 percent said they would vote for Trump, despite being “concerned” about the criminal cases.

On the campaign trail ahead of Monday’s Iowa caucuses, both Haley and Trump have argued that the polls show them to be the stronger Republican candidate to take on Biden.

“You can look at the polls, directly against Biden, there have been a lot of them. Ron doesn’t beat Biden, the battle between Trump and Biden. On a good day he might be up by two, that’s a margin of error,” Haley told fans in Ames on Sunday. “That’s another nail-biter of an election and another one that will hold our breath.”

Former President Donald Trump, who campaigned in Indianola, Iowa, on Sunday, also beat Biden, but by the narrowest margin. Still, he claimed during the campaign that he would perform best against the current president, and also touted his lead in the Republican primaries.

“I’m winning all those polls in the general election,” she said.

The CBS/YouGov poll’s margin of error is plus or minus 2.5 points.

“We’re beating Biden in every poll,” Trump claimed at a rally in Clinton, Iowa, last weekend. “They’re losing to Biden. They’re all like, ‘Oh, we’re going to win.’ They’re not going to win. First of all, they can’t beat me. They’re down 50, 60 points,” he said of Haley and DeSantis.

“They’re not going to win and they’re going to be hit harder than me,” the ex-president added.

DeSantis has argued that Trump’s legal troubles will make the ex-president’s 2024 run a headache — in an effort to push Trump supporters toward the Florida governor instead.
