President Joe Biden accompanied Jill Biden to Walter Reed Hospital on Wednesday to be with her for outpatient surgery to remove a small lesion over her right eye, known as Mohs Surgery.
The procedure is to detect skin cancer.
Dr. Kevin O’Connor, the president’s physician, said the lesion was found during a “routine skin cancer screening,” according to a memo released by the East Wing on Jan. 4.
O’Connor said it was being removed and examined “with an abundance of caution.”
Jill Biden, 71, is the oldest first lady in modern American history.

Jill Biden’s office announced last week that she would undergo the procedure at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
President Biden accompanied her to two other outpatient surgical appointments.
In April 2021, he underwent a “common medical procedure” at an outpatient center near the George Washington University campus.
And, in July 2021, she traveled to Walter Reed to have debris removed from her foot after she stepped on an unnamed object while walking on a beach in Hawaii.
Wednesday’s proceedings came after the Bidens returned from a three-day trip to Mexico, where they met with their Mexican and Canadian counterparts as part of the ‘Three Amigos’ summit.
The first lady had her own schedule during the trip, with a focus on women’s empowerment and cultural issues.
She toured the renowned Templo Mayor Museum on Tuesday afternoon with her counterparts, Dr. Beatriz Gutiérrez Müller from Mexico and Sophie Grégoire Trudeau from Canada.
And on Monday, he touted the “integrity” of the NFL as he watched young kids play flag football in Mexico, praising the league as it grappled with the fallout from Damar Hamlin’s injury and its response.
He also thanked his beloved Philadelphia Eagles, who beat the New York Giants in Sunday night’s playoff game.
I am a huge supporter of the NFL. Actually, on the plane here yesterday, I was watching the Eagles beat the Giants,” he said.
He praised the NFL for “teaching our children the values of respect and integrity.”

Jill Biden praised the NFL for its “integrity” during an event in Mexico as the league grapples with the fallout from its response to Damar Hamlin’s injury.
She joined local students in Mexico City for a Tochito NFL flag football event, which promotes gender equality and the empowerment of girls.
The NFL event on Monday was boisterous. Jill Biden cheered on high school students as they did drills, including tire races, ladder drills, dummy blocking and ball toss.
“This really empowers the young women and teaches our children the values of respect and integrity,” she said.
‘I always say that sport is the international language. And you can see how children from countries, children playing with other children from other countries: it’s about unity. And believing in the same values and goals.’
Jill Biden, a Philadelphia native, has been a longtime Eagles fan and football supporter. She attended one of his October games in Philadelphia.
She and President Biden issued a joint statement after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin was injured and said they were praying for him.
Hamlin was released from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center on Monday and returned to western New York to finish his recovery after going into cardiac arrest during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The NFL struggled with a slow response to his injury, taking 90 minutes after it happened to cancel the game.
The league was subsequently heavily criticized by commentators and fans on social media.
Meanwhile, the Eagles beat the Giants 22-16 on Sunday night, rebounding from two straight losses and earning a bye. The Giants, who didn’t play their starters against their former NFC rivals, now head to Minnesota for a wild card game against the Vikings.

Jill Biden, who teaches English at Northern Virginia Community College, gave the school kids some pain on Monday.

Before Monday’s NFL event, she hosted a conversation on women’s empowerment at the official residence of the United States Ambassador to Mexico, Ken Salazar.
