President Joe Biden said Monday he knows what it’s like to be called past your prime.
“People judged you and said you’re past your peak. Hell, I know something about that,” the 80-year-old told Houston Astros manager Dusty Baker.
Biden welcomed the World Series champion team to the White House where he had warm words for the team’s 74-year-old manager. Baker became the oldest ever manager to win the World Series when the Houston Astros clinched the title.
Baker became manager of the San Francisco Giants in 1993 after playing for himself for 19 seasons, including for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He previously served as manager of the Washington Nationals from 2016 to 2017. In 2020, he became manager of the Astros.
Some Democrats have questioned Biden’s age and health as he prepares for a second term in the White House. But Biden’s doctor has declared him healthy and fit to serve.

Biden is the oldest president in US history. If he wins a second term, he would be 86 when it is completed.
The president was full of jokes during his performance with the baseball champions.
“I remember rooting for him as a kid, and I was older than him,” Biden joked about Baker.
He began his remarks by saying, “My name is Joe Biden. I play midfield.’
And when he took a jersey from the team, he joked, “Put me in, coach, I’m ready to play.”
Biden was joined at the event by Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. Notably missing was first lady Jill Biden, whose team the Philadelphia Phillies lost to the Astros in the series. The Houston team defeated the Phillies in Game Six to win the Major League Baseball championship.
“This next part is hard to say. They beat the Phillies in six games,” the president said.
Biden often jokes that his marriage has made him a fan of the Philadelphia teams.
Meanwhile, Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips is urging his Democratic colleagues to jump into the presidential race because voters don’t want a “coronation” in the primary.
“Democrats tell me they don’t want a coronation, they want a contest,” Phillips, 54, told CBS’s Face the Nation Sunday.
He also cited a New York Times poll showing that 64 percent of Democrats do not want President Biden to be at the top of their list by 2024.
“If we don’t heed that call, we should be ashamed. And the consequences, I think, will be disastrous,” Phillips said.
“Put me in, coach, I’m ready to play,” said President Biden upon receiving his team jersey

Biden is currently facing Democratic challenges from self-help author Marianne Williamson and environmental advocate and anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Phillips, who recently met with donors to discuss a possible bid of his own, has already said he will not support Biden in 2024.
“No,” Phillips replied to a radio station question late last month. “I think the country would be well served by a new generation of compelling, well-prepared, dynamic Democrats stepping forward.”
