Beyonce’s Renaissance concert film tops the box office with $22 million leading the way for biggest first December weekend since 2018

Beyonce's highly anticipated concert film Renaissance helped revive the box office with a solid opening weekend of $22 million.
The numbers were especially high for the first weekend in December, a typically stagnant weekend, with the $22 million coming in just shy of the $24.2 million weekend record set two decades ago by Tom Cruise's The Last Samurai, via Deadline.
The concert paved the way for a $95 million total weekend, the biggest in the first weekend of December since 2018.
It was also revealed on Sunday that Marvel will stop reporting international grosses for The Marvels, meaning the film will soon end up as the lowest-grossing MCU film of all time, currently at $80.7 million domestically and $197 million worldwide.

Renaissance premiered exclusively at AMC Theaters, the chain's second concert film this year following Taylor Swift's The Eras Tour, which grossed $178.8 million domestically and $249.5 million worldwide.
Renaissance – which Beyonce wrote and directed (with James B. Merryman and Mark Ritchie directing the live segments) opened in 2,539 theaters.
It earned an impressive average of $8,270 per screen, although the two-hour, 49-minute concert film did not fare as well overseas.
The film only grossed $6.4 million in foreign markets, for a worldwide debut of $27.4 million, on an undisclosed budget.
Beyonce's film ended the two-week reign of The Hunger Games prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, which dropped 50.1% to $14.5 million for a domestic total of $121.2 million.
In third place was Godzilla Minus One, which debuted with just over $11 million from 2,308 theaters for a decent $4,779 per screen average.
Trolls Band Together stayed firmly in fourth place with $7.6 million ($74.8 million domestic) and Wish rounded out the top 5 with $7.4 million ($41.9 million domestic).
Rounding out the top 10 were Napoleon with $7.1 million ($45.7 million domestic), Animal with $6.1 million, The Shift with $4.3 million, Silent Night with $3 million and Thanksgiving with $2.6 million.

Marvel Studios' The Marvels already fell out of the top 10 with an 11th place finish, earning $2.5 million in its fourth weekend.
While it's unclear when the film will leave theaters, it will clearly be the lowest-grossing MCU film and the only one not to exceed $100 million worldwide.
The sequel to Captain Marvel reunited Brie Larson's Captain Marvel with Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel by Iman Vellani.
Next weekend brings action thriller Unit 262 and La Syndicalist to the cinema.
