Bethenny Frankel slams ‘California sober’ people who quit alcohol but ‘wanna smoke pot’ and do cocaine

Bethenny Frankel has dismissed the trend of “California sober” people giving up alcohol only to turn to drugs like marijuana and cocaine.

The phrase “California sober” went viral in 2021 when Demi Lovato used it to explain to Joe Rogan that she was on the wagon but still using cannabis.

Demi, who suffered a near-fatal heroin overdose in 2018, later renounced the label, stating that “sober sober is the only way to go.”

Now, in a new episode of her podcast, Bethenny has brutally roasted people who say they “just want to have a bag of cocaine but don’t want to drink alcohol.” Just B.

The 54-year-old reality star, who has a wine brand called Forever Young and a pre-mixed cocktail line called Skinnygirl and has also invested in Mingle Mocktails, said she herself has “not had alcohol in a minute.”

She noted that she has postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), a neurological condition that causes the patient’s heart rate to accelerate when sitting or standing, a phenomenon that is exacerbated by warm weather.

“Some people are on the run – that’s the down-to-earth Californian. Now they want to make edibles and smoke weed,” Bethenny said.

“Like I don’t want to take my place with something else: ‘Like I just want to have a bag of cocaine, but I don’t want to drink alcohol,’” she added.

“I know people who like to do crazy things — it’s like, ‘Let’s do heroin, buy a face mask and drink water’ — and I’m not kidding,” Bethenny said.

“You know, I haven’t had any alcohol in a minute. I have POTS, which makes me severely dehydrated. It almost looks like a Shishito pepper,” she explained.

‘One to two times out of 20 that I drink, it’s going to be really, really dangerous and bad and dehydrated and [I] Like, I need an IV and it just doesn’t really work for me.”

However, she acknowledged that giving up alcohol raised questions about “how to deal” with situations like social drinking and dating.

‘Dating is a big challenge. Dating is hard without drinking. It’s something to do. And just like now, there are many non-alcoholic options, but are they weird? Do you feel uncomfortable? And there are sober bars,” she said.

“And it’s something you have to break through, you know? You have to break through. It’s almost like juice and after a while you really start to feel healthier and lighter, your eyes become whiter and you sleep better.’

She admitted that quitting alcohol means “becoming a little less social.” You certainly do. You don’t stay out late doing stupid things.’

Bethenny added that sobriety “can kind of become your personality, especially if you’re not an alcoholic, like you’re just someone who can choose.”

She recalled that the previous day she was trying “non-alcoholic wines — which are all bad, by the way — and accidentally took a sip of an alcoholic wine, because I didn’t realize it, and like, that’s not going to make me die.” We don’t get to work, which, by the way, for a really serious alcoholic, can be a really bad thing.”

Bethenny, who is dating businessman Tom Villante, said she “went on a date on New Year’s Eve” and “we didn’t drink, and that was an achievement.”

She noted, “You had to plan ahead a little bit, like, “What are we going to drink? What is our favorite cocktail? What is our atmosphere?” Because you stand there for a few hours and think, “What are we doing? What are our activities?”

Bethenny was first spotted with Tom in September, before they officially hit the red carpet at a Yellowstone premiere in November.

Her dashing new boyfriend is the CEO of YapStone, a payment processing platform designed for people who operate vacation rental properties.

Bethenny found herself denying engagement rumors with Tom after she was spotted on the beach on Thanksgiving with a ring on her left four finger.

She went public with him just months after the collapse of her engagement to financier Paul Bernon, with whom she was involved on and off for six years.

Over the summer, Bethenny was spotted frolicking on the beach in St. Tropez with 46-year-old German pop artist Niclas Castello.

Niclas was previously married to Sylvie Meis, who is known as the ‘Dutch Victoria Beckham’ due to her previous marriage to star footballer Rafael Van Der Vaart.

Paul and Bethenny reportedly split around March, and she kept the estimated $1 million engagement ring he gave her, a source said. We weekly.

A friend of the couple said the relationship “just wouldn’t work” because Bethenny and Paul were “so different” from each other — for example, because “he’s an under-the-radar guy.”

Bethenny later revealed that she “initiated” the breakup because she “wasn’t happy” and felt “something needed to change,” but clarified that “nobody dumped anyone” and that the final decision was “definitely mutual.”

“Some people are moving – that's the down-to-earth Californian,” Bethenny said: “Now they want to do edibles and smoke weed.”

Paul, 45, quickly reconciled with Olivia Culpo’s older sister Aurora, 35, but they were only together for two months before news of their split broke last July.

Bethenny has a daughter named Bryn Hoppy, 14, with her second and last ex-husband Jason Hoppy, with whom she had a nearly nine-year custody battle.

Jason and Bethenny married in 2010 and divorced in 2012 – but it wasn’t until December 2021 that he agreed to end the “toxic environment” of their legal war.

Bethenny, who was once married to her boyfriend Peter Sussman for a year in the 1990s, released a self-help book about love in 2016 in the midst of her divorce proceedings with Jason.

The book, co-written with Eve Adamson, was cheekily titled I Suck At Relationships So You Don’t Have To: 10 Rules To Not Ruin Your Happily Ever After.
