This sausage roll has been named BEST in Australia with foodies travelling hours to taste it – and the baker insists no sauce is needed

A popular Queensland bakery has just won the award for the best sausage roll in the country.

Kenilworth Bakery on the Sunshine Coast beat out the competition with its sausage rolls to be named ‘best in Australia’ at the Wotif 2024 Uniquely Australia Awards.

The travel app’s annual awards recognise six distinctly Australian experiences and provide a guide to the country’s best ‘local gems’.

The bakery behind the winning sausage roll is already famous for its sandwiches, cakes and a viral ‘coffee in donut’ that has fans queuing for hours to get their hands on.

But their “impressively long” $25 one-kilo sausage roll (which also comes in a smaller size for $5) – which Australians drove hours for – scored the highest score in Wotif’s most competitive category.

Owner Jenna Sanders’ “incredibly artisanal” creation is a giant block of golden brown, butter-coated dough with a perfectly rich, savory sausage filling.

Speaking to FEMAIL, Mrs Sanders said her ‘secret family recipe’ has been passed down for three generations and she uses oats instead of just breadcrumbs.

‘The oats absorb the flavour well and that is one of the reasons why our sausage roll is so popular.’

The handmade sausage rolls are made without any machines and baked fresh every day.

If you manage to eat Australia’s best sausage roll in one sitting – including all the tomato sauce that comes with it – the baker will even give you your money back.

But the head baker and owner of Kenilworth believes it is ‘sacrilege’ to use tomato sauce on a sausage roll: ‘A good sausage roll doesn’t need sauce.’

Jenna said they sell around 2,000 of the popular sandwiches in a normal week, and even more during school holidays. She can also easily eat one of the 1kg sandwiches in one sitting.

The popular bakery has also gained cult status for its ‘amazing’ 1kg doughnuts, including the jam and cream doughnuts and the ‘strawberry snake’, selling 5,000 of them every Saturday.

‘However, it was the classic sausage roll that generated the most debate and took the title of most voted category by Australians.’

Anyone tempted to visit a branch of Kenilworth Bakery might be convinced by an Australian who made the two-hour trek to sample the “insanely delicious” treats.

“I’ve never been so impressed with a sausage roll. It was amazing, it made my day,” she said.
