Benni McCarthy will reportedly leave Manchester United at the end of this month.
The striker’s contract expires after two seasons at the club.
McCarthy, a former Blackburn striker, is keen to get back into the dugout as manager, according to The Athletics.
One of Ten Hag’s requests to extend his contract at Old Trafford was to extend McCarthy’s deal, according to The sun.
Although the Dutchman is close to signing a new deal, it appears he will lead the team without McCarthy’s help.

Erik ten Hag wanted McCarthy to stay at Old Trafford for at least another season
McCarthy was praised for helping Marcus Rashford enjoy his best-ever season in 2022-23, scoring 30 goals in all competitions.
Last season wasn’t that strong, as United only scored 57 goals. That is a fairly normal number for the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era and not the lowest.
United are aiming to hire two coaches to deal with the departures of McCarthy and Eric Ramsay, the first-team coach who left in February to manage MLS team Minnesota United.
The Red Devils hope to appoint Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake, the manager of the Dutch club Go Ahead Eagles.
They want to bring in Hake, 52, and Van Nistelrooy as senior coaches, a move that will raise questions about the future of Ten Hag’s current assistants Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren.
Heek has a similar background to Ten Hag, having grown up in the east of the Netherlands.
He became manager at Ten Hag’s first club as a player, FC Twente, and the two men also coached Utrecht and Go Ahead Eagles.
Hake guided the Deventer club to Europe for the third time in their history – and the first time in nine years – when they defeated Utrecht in extra time of a Europa Conference Play-off last month.

Hake and Van Nistelrooy have been drafted in as part of an overhaul of United’s coaching staff after Ten Hag kept his job following an end-of-season review.
The 54-year-old United manager is currently in talks over a new contract, with his current deal entering its final year.
The talks are ‘positive’ and it is hoped the two parties can agree terms before Ten Hag returns for pre-season training early next month.
