Benedict Cumberbatch wears a huge furry monster costume on the set of Netflix series in New York

Benedict Cumberbatch donned a huge furry monster costume when he came into character on the set of his upcoming Netflix series.

The actor, 46, who will take on the lead role of puppeteer Vincent Anderson, looked confused in the plump, fur-clad body as he held his blue head in his hands.

During Saturday filming in New York, Benedict was joined by a crowd of background actors who cheered him on as he ran through the park.

Then he put the monster head back on, complete with horns, thick blue eyebrows and big teeth.

Titled Eric, the six-part series follows Vincent as he searches for his missing son Edgar after he goes missing on his way to school.

Desperate and upset, the puppeteer believes Edgar will find his way home if he brings his son’s drawing of Eric the monster to life and gets him on TV.

While Vincent’s increasingly destructive behavior alienates his family, his colleagues and the detectives who try to help him, it is Eric, a delusional necessity, who becomes his only ally in his pursuit.

Set in New York City in the 1980s, the six-part series began shooting last month in Budapest, Hungary, which will double as a US city.

Netflix shared the official synopsis on Twitter in November 2021, writing, “From writer Abi Morgan, this suspenseful thriller follows what happens when a young boy goes missing in 1980s Manhattan.

“His father, Vincent, a puppeteer on America’s leading children’s TV show, finds solace in his friendship with Eric, the monster who lives under his son’s bed.”

In an interview with deadlineexplained writer Abi Morgan, “Eric is a dark and crazy journey into the heart of 1980s New York, and the good, bad and ugly world of Vincent.

“The opportunity to work with Benedict and the creative team at Sister and Netflix is irresistible.

“With Lucy Forbes at the helm, I feel privileged to be working at a time of such great creativity in our industry. Fingers crossed that Eric will be a welcome addition.’
