When Arsenal asked their players for one word to describe Ben White, ‘warrior’ was the most popular.

“Every team would love to have a Ben White in the team,” was the longer assessment of Gabriel Martinelli.

He may not be prone to smiling often and his serious demeanor may be a hurdle for some, but just how valued the defender is within this squad is clear now that another vital part of Arsenal’s backline has been secured for another four years.

Ben White’s new contract until 2028, with the option for an extra year, is a milestone. His fellow defenders William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes are signed until 2027, while Takehiro Tomiyasu’s new contract is expected to be announced in the coming days.

It is the foundations that Edu and Co have laid that will ensure that the Gunners remain a threat for years to come.

White explained he feels at home at Arsenal and welcomed the club’s ‘ambition’ – reasons for him to stay

White said: “I’ve been loaned out three times, I’ve been placed for a year. I think this is the first time I’ve really settled down and know I’m not going anywhere in the summer. It’s incredible to be here and I would love to stay (for more years).

“I think if you look at the ages, things are getting better.”

Seeing the likes of Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard sign long-term contracts also played a role.

He said, ‘Yes, certainly. I think when these types of players are signed it shows that there is real ambition at the club and it is something I am happy to be a part of.”

The 26-year-old’s talents and character have been highlighted more widely in recent months. Take last week’s 2-1 win over Brentford, where he provided two assists.

Or his willingness to continue playing week in and week out this season, despite a minor knee injury since late last year.

Arsenal supporters have long admired his attributes, but it feels like White’s talents are increasingly being recognized across the league.

However, it is undoubtedly a shame that the defender is not a competitor for his country. He is more than worthy of a place – England will announce their squad for two friendlies today – but White’s card appears to be marked after he left the England camp at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Nevertheless, their loss is Arsenal’s gain.

Manager Mikel Arteta added: ‘It’s great news that Ben is committing his future to the club. Ben is a key figure for us, a top professional with a winning mentality and one of the guys who sets a good example every day.

‘Ben’s ability, determination and positive attitude are so important, but he is also a great character and person. We all look forward to continuing to work with Ben for years to come.”
