What is nephrostomy?

A nephrostomy is a tube that allows urine to drain through an opening in the skin at the back of the kidney.

It is a drainage tube that is placed directly into the kidney through the skin.

This tube is placed according to the highest practice standards under radiological or X-ray guidance.

The tube is then connected to a drainage bag outside the body.

This tube is placed if there is a blockage in your ureter (tube from your kidney to your bladder).

A blockage in the ureter can prevent urine from flowing from the kidneys to the bladder. If left untreated, this can cause damage to the kidneys.

This is usually done as an emergency procedure, for example if there is a serious infection, severe blockage or kidney damage.

The length of time the tube must remain varies from patient to patient. Your surgeon will inform you about this.
